Symposium Overview

“Collaborative Technologies for Teaching and Scholarship” enables us to open new pathways of collaboration with our students and our colleagues. This presentation will examine the technologies, techniques and underpinning pedagogies that enable efficient and effective collaborations. We will look at evidence in the newly-published National Survey of Student Engagement that points to higher levels of engagement, deep thinking and reflection in online classes - including ways to achieve those through online collaboration and interaction. Examples of collaborative technologies include:

  • Wikis
  • Vodcasts
  • Social networking
  • Virtual worlds
  • And more

We will demonstrate easy-to-use new tools that facilitate efficient collaboration. Collaborative technologies can enhance these activities such as:

  • Joint authorship of articles
  • Student-led group projects
  • Faculty team teaching
  • Project research
  • And more

About the Presenter:

Ray Schroeder

Ray Schroeder, professor emeritus of communication, is the founding director of the Office of Technology-Enhanced Learning (OTEL) as well as the Center for Online Learning, Research, and Service (COLRS) at the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS). He initiated the online learning program at UIS and is dedicated to faculty development and pedagogical support of the online initiative. Professor Schroeder’s work in the area of online learning and the application of technology to enhance the learning process has been including in many publications, as well, Professor Schroeder has given numerous national presentations on the subject. He has published the popular “Online Learning Update” and “Educational Technology” blogs for the past seven years. Professor Schroeder has received numerous awards for his efforts in online learning, several of which include:
Sloan Consortium Distinguished Scholar in Online Learning (2002-2003)
Sloan-Consortium award for the "Most Outstanding Achievement in ALN by an Individual" (2002)
University of Southern Maine "Visiting Scholar in Online Learning" (2006-2009)
Professor Schroeder is also the founder of the New Century Learning Consortium.
