Symposium Overview

The Symposium will provide an overview of Online and Blended Education at UIC  Executive Director of External Education, Mary Niemiec will discuss the programs offered through UIC Online, the support available including development of online and blended programs and courses, budgeting, instructional design for both online and blended courses as well as marketing support. After 20 years of classroom teaching, Jane Addams College of Social Work professor Jim Gleeson , will discuss his motivations for changing the instructional modality of his course. Professor Gleeson will provide an overview of his online Kinship Care course and share his experiences in both developing and teaching the course.

About the Presenters

James P. Gleeson, PhD, ACSW, is Associate Professor at the Jane Addams College of Social Work, University of Illinois at Chicago where he teaches in the Child and Family Concentration of the Master of Social Work program and in the PhD program. He has extensive experience as a child welfare practitioner, administrator, consultant, and researcher. Jim has been principal investigator for several federal and state funded child welfare research, curriculum development and training projects. Dr. Gleeson's research and publications focus on kinship care policy and practice, child welfare training and evaluation of child welfare programs and practice. He is a member of the Review Board for the Child Welfare journal and is a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Public Child Welfare. He served on the Child Welfare League of America's national taskforce on best practice standards for kinship care and the League's National Kinship Care Advisory Committee. Dr. Gleeson is principal investigator for two federally funded research projects that examine Individual and Social Protective Factors for Children in Informal Kinship Care. His prior grant funded research includes Achieving Permanency for Children in Kinship Foster Care, which resulted in the development of a training manual and videotapes for child welfare practitioners helping kinship caregivers to make permanency decisions for the related children in their care.

Mary P. Niemiec is Executive Director for External Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Responsible for online, blended and professional continuing education, Ms. Niemiec directs UIC Online and the efforts of several instructional outreach units that support the 15 colleges in their outreach goals. Ms. Niemiec is also leading UIC's campus-wide initiative in blended learning.

Niemiec's most recent professional focus and academic interest has been in public administration, adult education and online learning. She has been the recipient of numerous grants to support initiatives in these areas. Ms. Niemiec has also presented at conferences, seminars and workshops on the topics of non-traditional, online and blended instruction. She is UIC's representative to the Sloan Consortium, University Continuing Education Association, Illinois Virtual Campus, Illinois Council for Continuing Education.

Additionally, Ms. Niemiec is Vice Chair of the Governing Board of the University Center of Lake County and is the Council of Member Institutions representative for UIC. She also serves on several UIC campus committees including the Blended Learning Steering Committee and UIC Online Oversight Committee.
