Symposium Overview
Synchronous, or real-time, communication is beginning to show itself to be a popular technology in online education and with the merging of Web and audio/video delivery formats that are successful and affordable; it has become a highly popular trend. UIC offers its faculty, students and staff a variety of methods to participate in an online or blended classroom in a synchronous manner. In our upcoming symposium, Edward J. Campbell, from UIC 's Instructional Technology Lab, provides an overview of some of the latest technology available within the Blackboard Learning Management System as well as other applications for synchronous learning that are not within Blackboard. The overview includes:

- Centra Symposium (e-Rooms), the chat and virtual classroom within Blackboard
- A new instant chat application, "Pronto", that works inside Blackboard
- An overview of live streaming on the Internet.

e-Rooms is a Web-based collaboration server that allows for real-time communication with several remote locations. This seamless application supports a wide range of different communication modalities including audio chat (VoIP), text chat, application sharing, real-time polling, video and Websafaris.

At the symposium you will learn how to:

- Request space for an e-Rooms session and properly use the software to connect with remote individuals
- Install and use Pronto, a new instant chat software synched up with Blackboard.
- Utilize the communication tools in Blackboard (Virtual Classroom & Chat).

Don't get left behind because educational communication technology seems too complicated. Come learn about the latest communication tools and how UIC faculty can benefit from them.
