Symposium Overview

In collaboration with the Graduate College, Faculty Affairs, the Department of Communication, and the Academic Computing and Communications Center, External Education is pleased to announce the first e-Teaching symposium, Enhancing Teaching Through the Use of Instructional Technology, to be held Wednesday, October 5, 2005. Developed for UIC faculty, the e-Teaching symposium will include presentations aimed at providing resources to faculty who want to enhance their teaching with technology, ranging from fully online courses to blended learning to technology-enhanced.

Enhancing Teaching Through the Use of Instructional Technology will also include an overview of UIC 's online and blended initiatives as well as presentations discussing tips for designing effective online and blended courses, tools & technology for building them, and evaluation methods to effectively assess the courses.

About the Presenters

Mary Niemiec
Mary P. Niemiec is Executive Director of External Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Overseeing instructional outreach for UIC, Ms. Niemiec directs the efforts of the campus-wide instructional outreach units - Office of External Education, Office of Continuing Education, Tutorium in Intensive English and Summer Session. Primary responsibilities include oversight for distance education, professional development programs and credit non-degree offerings at UIC. In addition to chairing the UIC Online Oversight Committee, Ms. Niemiec also represents UIC on numerous university system, state and national committees. Most recently, Ms. Niemiec has undertaken leadership of a committee identifying and developing policies, procedures and support infrastructure for a Blended Course Initiative at UIC.

Matthew Allen
Our keynote presenter is e-Teaching expert, Dr. Matthew Allen, who comes to UIC from Curtin University of Technology in Australia where he is an Associate Professor of Internet Studies. Dr. Allen also serves as the Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning, Division of Humanities. He founded the first Department of Internet Studies and his experience has led him to be recognized globally has a leader in the e-Teaching community. Dr. Allen holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the Australian National University and a Master of Arts in Literature and Communication from Murdoch University.

Renee Welch
Renee Welch joined UIC as a project researcher in 1996 providing project management and leadership in the coordination of research based projects focused on School Improvement and Education. In 2002 as a Research Associate Professor for the Institute for Mathematics & Science Education, Renee was responsible for data collection and analysis, case study development, and reporting for National Science Foundation funded projects. Dr. Welch currently works for UIC's Office of External Education as an Instructional Designer, responsible for faculty support and the development of interactive multimedia content for online delivery of university courses and professional and continuing of education programs. She holds a doctorate of philosophy degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is a certified Master Online Instructor.
