Daily Schedules:

It is our goal to provide you with a wide variety of learning experiences - lectures, discussions of specific texts or test cases, guided field work as a group, field trips, opportunities for museum work alone or in groups, time for library work at UIC, at the Chicago Public Library, or at other local and regional academic and specialty libraries, and the chance to develop specific projects of your own.

Our program is designed so that, in most cases, mornings are spent as a group in lectures and discussions, while afternoons are left open for fieldwork, library research, and reading time. There are exceptions, however, so be sure to consult this syllabus on a weekly and daily basis to remind yourself of our scheduling. Field trips especially are important, and we can't hold up the schedule to search out participants who are tardy or who have forgotten the program.

Classroom days begin promptly at 8:30 am-please don't be late, as we'll be starting the lectures. Each faculty member will hand out a general outline of the subject under discussion, with a brief bibliography. The class begins with a general lecture. This is followed by a short break and then a return for discussion with a focus on the specific readings. Often we will break out into smaller groups to discuss specific questions, and then return to report on group results. Morning sessions are the norm, and they are set to end at about 12:30pm. When afternoon sessions are scheduled, they begin at 1:30 and last until 3 or 3:30pm.

Classes will be held from June 20 to July 14 on the third floor of 1333 S. Halsted Street (across the street from the housing complex, to the east) in the conference room of the Tutorium in Intensive English (TIE).

Please expect to attend all sessions; we have built in a great deal of open time in the afternoons to enable you to do reading, to research in the university or other local libraries, and to do field work or study. If for some reason you cannot schedule a meeting or appointment at any other time than class time, please inform the staff well beforehand so that we do not become concerned at your absence.
