We all have a strong sense of what is considered acceptable English and what is not. The knowledge we all have and use every day is what allows us to communicate effectively with others, but what we are often lacking is a concrete knowledge of what it is that makes what we say correct or incorrect, and when communication goes awry, we often know that it is wrong, but not how to fix it. This course is designed to build on our intrinsic knowledge of what is grammatically correct and what is not. In order to do this, we will start by examining the differences between descriptive and prescriptive grammar, and we will use those differences to work holistically on what goes wrong in our communication and how to fix it. In looking at grammar and communication as a unit, we will also examine the rhetorical effect our language choices have on our audience and the consequences of those choices. One area on which we will focus our examination of language and our discussion of grammar will be the workplace. We will not focus on specific businesses, but will focus on acquiring and utilizing skills which will enable us not only to improve our own writing but also be able to help others with their writing within the work environment.
Students should be prepared to complete reading assignments and homework between classes, as well as do individual and partner-based exercises during the workshop.
