OIA is the UIC Fulbright Campus Representative

The Office of International Affairs represents UIC regarding the Fulbright Program. We recognize the opportunities Fulbright offers to our academic community. Promoting scholar and faculty exchange advances the internationalization of the faculty itself, and subsequently of the entire campus. OIA's role in promoting the Fulbright Program is to:

  • Function as the UIC contact point for Fulbright commission administrators
  • Distribute to the UIC community, the announcement of the annual U.S. competition for Fulbright awards
  • Publicize the Fulbright Program in campus publications, Listservs, and Web sites
  • Publicize the names of the faculty and administrators who receive Fulbright grants
  • Organize annual campus workshops for faculty who are who are considering applying for the Fulbright Program
  • Encourage participation in the Scholar-in-Residence and Occasional Lecturer Programs
  • Alert the campus community to the presence of visiting scholars
  • Undertake campus programming which takes full advantage of the valuable presence of Fulbright visitors

HISTORY 

Following the Second World War, the U.S. Congress created the Fulbright Program with the intention of creating international bonds. In the last 59 years, the Fulbright Program has seen more than 255,000 participants chosen for their leadership potential. Since the establishment of the Fulbright Program, more than 42,000 Americans and 158,000 participants from other countries have benefited from the Fulbright experience.

FULBRIGHT PROGRAMS 2010-2011
 

The Fulbright Scholar Program is offering lecturing, research or combination lecturing/research awards in over 125 countries for the 2010-2011 academic year. Opportunities are available not only for college and university faculty and administrators but also for professionals from business and government, as well as artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers, independent scholars and many others.  There are awards in 45 different fields or disciplines, and a variety of sub-disciplines and interdisciplinary fields.

The application deadline is August 1, 2009. U.S. citizenship is required. For other eligibility requirements and detailed award descriptions visit our website at www.cies.org, or send a request for materials to scholars@cies.iie.org.

Traditional Fulbright Scholar Program: 

The traditional Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year. Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. To learn more about this program, please visit the Traditional Fulbright homepage.

Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program: 

Candidates should be senior scholars and have a significant publication and teaching record.

Fulbright Senior Specialists Program: 

The Fulbright Senior Specialists Program is designed to provide short-term academic opportunities (two to six weeks) for U.S. faculty and professionals. Deadlines are rolling.

Fulbright Senior Specialist projects are designed to provide U.S. faculty and professionals with opportunities to collaborate with professional counterparts at non-U.S. post-secondary academic institutions on curriculum and faculty development, institutional planning and a variety of other activities.

Note: Personal Research is not funded via the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program.

Fulbright International Education Administrators Program: 

U.S. international education administrators are invited to apply for two-to three-week summer seminars in Germany, Japan, or Korea.

Fulbright Visiting Non-U.S. Scholar Program:

This program is for non-U.S. scholars interested in applying for research/lecturing grants in the United States.

Visiting Scholar Occasional Lecturer Program (OLP):

Provides support for scholars and professionals from abroad who are already in the U.S. on Fulbright grants to visit other campuses for the purpose of guest lecturing. Scholars apply to CIES for reimbursement of their round trip transportation costs.

Worldwide Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (SIR) Program: 

Brings visiting scholars and professionals from abroad to lecture at U.S. colleges and universities for one semester or academic year.

European Union Scholar-in-Residence (EU SIR) Program: 

Strengthens expertise in European Union affairs by bringing to U.S. campus scholars from the European Union.
