Student Exchange Program
The Student Exchange Program is a mutual exchange of students between UIC and international colleges and universities in Asia, Europe, Oceania, North America and South America. Students who participate in the exchange program may study for a summer, semester or academic year abroad. The reciprocity of the exchange program offers students an affordable option for overseas study because students only pay tuition to UIC and do not pay provider fees. Students in the exchange program are responsible for paying for food and accommodations abroad.
The Student Exchange Program offers many programs tailored to meet the needs of both undergraduate and graduate students and students with strong language proficiency, as well as students who do not speak any foreign language. To apply for the Student Exchange Program, students must submit an application. Deadlines vary by program. Please contact the OIA at OIA@uic.edu for your specific program deadline and directions on how to apply.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
Most, if not all, financial aid can be applied to your Student Exchange Program. It is also advisable for students to apply for additional scholarships for their term abroad.
Course Credit
Students participating on an exchange program will receive UIC credit for courses approved by their academic advisor. Students will meet with their academic advisor to determine how these credits will be counted towards their UIC degree. Please note that the grades students receive abroad will count toward their GPA.
Safety and Security
The Student Exchange Program Health and Safety Manual has been created to outline the procedures and policies related to participation in the Student Exchange Program. Topics covered include preventive health care, international health insurance, safety and security and FERPA.
Eligibility
Interested students must meet the following eligibility requirements in order to apply.
- At least a 2.8 GPA
- Must be currently enrolled and degree-seeking at UIC
- Must have completed at least 12 credit hours at UIC before applying
Science without Borders is a Brazilian Government scholarship program which aims to send 100,000 Brazilian undergraduate and graduate students under full time/non-degree/for credit status for an entire academic year in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and creative industries at top universities around the world. Funding is also provided for students to pursue full PhDs abroad. UIC is a proud hosting institution of these scholars. The Institute of International Education (IIE) manages Science without Borders for undergraduates in the U.S.. SWB is supported at the highest levels of the U.S. and Brazil governments including the Presidents and Ambassadors in both the US and Brazil. The U.S. and Brazil are committed to expanding on this successful program by developing more partnerships between higher education institutions to support further collaboration between the two countries.
Science without Borders is run and managed by two Brazilian higher education agencies CAPES and CNPq. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) is the Federal Agency of Support and Evaluation of Postgraduate Education in Brazil. CAPES is the agency of the Ministry of Education dedicated to the evaluation and expansion of higher education in Brazil.
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), or National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, sits within the Ministry of Science and Technology. CNPq is dedicated to the advancement of scientific research and technology, and to the development of human resources for research in Brazil.
In addition to sending 100,000 of the best Brazilian students and researchers to the best universities in the world, the program will also provide 'Inbound Fellowships', which aim to bring to Brazilian universities and research centers a total of 1,250 researchers (860 early-career researchers and 390 senior scholars) under an unparalleled funding scheme. UIC has already established exchanges of researchers and scholars under this umbrella.
The 'Young Talent' awards fully fund 1-3 year research stays in Brazil with an attractive package (round-trip tickets, relocation expenses, a tax-free highly competitive lecturer-level monthly allowance, a contribution toward research costs and funding for research assistantship) and a particularly generous 2-3 year grant is available to 'Special Visiting Researchers' (round-trip tickets for every 1-3 month annual visit to Brazil, a tax-free highly competitive senior-level monthly allowance, and a Post-doctoral Fellow in Brazil).
