John Nuveen Center for International Affairs

Located within the Office of International Affairs at UIC, the John Nuveen Center for International Affairs was established at UIC in 1986 through an endowment by the Nuveen family. Among its activities the Nuveen Center develops and supports programs and activities designed to increase awareness and understanding of international issues and world cultures.

As part of its mission the John Nuveen Center oversees the awarding of The John and Grace Nuveen International Development Awards for faculty. These awards are intended to encourage international program development at UIC by supporting faculty in activity that will result in an internationally enriched academic environment. Typical proposals may involve, but need not be limited to:

  • the initiation, strengthening, or expansion of collaborative research programs
  • student and faculty exchanges
  • internships and professional development programs
The Nuveen Center also administers The John and Grace Nuveen International Awards for Students. These are intended to assist students participating in an International Student Exchange Program through the Nuveen Center and Office of International Affairs. Awards may be used to support educational and/or living expenses while participating in such a program.

The Nuveen Center also supports special campus-wide events, lectures, and forums which bring together members of the UIC community, international guests, and the general public, to hear presentations on, and to discuss, important international issues. Through the John Nuveen Center, UIC also plans and provides cultural activities and events, offering opportunities for international scholars and exchange students to meet with American counterparts. The intent is to foster constructive international contact at the people-to-people level. In the same manner, the Nuveen Center also supports OIA's activities related to visiting foreign delegations.

The Nuveen Center also regularly supports UIC services to visiting international scholars, faculty, and exchange students including the providing of orientations to campus and the city; housing information both prior to and upon their arrival; and regular social and informational programs held for short term scholars and students. These services are intended to make the academic visit to UIC more comfortable and rewarding.

The Nuveen Center also helps support the university's presence in various organizations at the local, regional, national, and international level, further strengthening the mission of UIC to become a World-Class University through continuous international engagement. Such support secures the membership and attendance at organizations such as the Institute for International Education, NAFSA, the Association of International Educators, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and the Center for Economic Development.
