Anthony Benesch

Anthony Benesch holds the rank of Counselor in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. Before his assignment to UIC, he was Consul and Deputy Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, one of our largest consulates. He previously served as political officer in Morocco, Tunis, Egypt and Oman, where he headed the Embassy political/economic section during the first Gulf War. Mr. Benesch had other overseas assignments in France and Canada. In the State Department in Washington DC, he was Deputy Director of the Office of Egyptian and North African Affairs (1995-7) and Deputy Director of the Office of UN Political Affairs (1997-2000), which coordinated U.S. strategy in the UN Security Council on Iraq Oil-for-Food, Libya/PanAm 103, Kosovo, East Timor, Sierra Leone, Congo among other issues. Earlier in his career, Mr. Benesch was desk officer for several countries in the Office of West African Affairs.
Mr. Benesch studied Arabic for two years at the Foreign Service Institute in Arlington, Virginia and in Tunis. His languages are French, Arabic and Portuguese. He received a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Maryland and an M.A. in Modern European History from the University of Tennessee, where he has also completed work toward the PhD in Modern European History. Prior to joining the Foreign Service in 1977, he taught European History at the University of Tennessee and Morgan State University. Mr. Benesch received a State Department Superior Honor Award for his leadership at the U.S. Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro during the September 11 terrorist attacks and their aftermath.
