The Chiba University Exchange Program has a long-standing tradition of excellence with UIC. Situated in a great location, Chiba University is a great place for UIC students to study Japanese language and learn about Japanese culture first-hand. Please contact Kristin Kutella in the Office of International Affairs at kkutella@uic.edu with any questions.

School year:

The school year for the Chiba University Program begins in the beginning of October and runs through the end of July. Students participating in the Chiba University Exchange Program may only attend Chiba U. for one full academic year. Students may not apply for only one semester. 

Courses:

Beginning with the 09/10 school year, courses through the Chiba University Exchange Program will be offered with a range of language ability requirements. Some courses will be offered entirely in English, some in basic Japanese, some in intermediate Japanese, and some in advanced Japanese.  Courses will range from being taught completely with other international students to a mixture of international students and Japanese national students. Courses will be offered in the following categories: 

  1. Japan Studies: Humanities

  2. Japan Studies: Social Sciences

  3. Environment and Lifestyle

  4. Cutting-edge Technology

  5. Intercultural Understanding

  6. Japanese Language

Each exchange student at Chiba University is also assigned a Japanese student tutor. Your tutor may help you with your Japanese and also help you with your daily life in Japan.

Location:

Housing:

Students participating in the Chiba University Exchange Program reside in the Chiba University International House. Each student receives a single room which includes a furnished room (bed, closet, bookshelf, desk and chair), mini-kitchen, and bathroom. Rooms are equipped with air conditioning. Electricity and water are charged separately (approx. 3,000 Yen/mo.).  The Basic Dormitory Fee includes laundry and internet access fees. 

Basic Dormitory Fee= 14,000(Yen) per month (~$150/ month in Oct. 2009)

One-time clean up and maintenance fee= 15,000 (Yen)   (~$160 in Oct. 2009)

Deadlines:

The Chiba University Program has an earlier deadline than most UIC exchange programs. Students must submit all application materials to Kristin Kutella by February 10, 2010.

JASSO Scholarship

As part of their Short-term Student Exchange Promotion Program, Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), offers a limited number of scholarships for which international students are eligible to apply. JASSO Scholarship recipients receive a settle-in allowance of 80,000 (Yen) (subject to change) and a monthly stipend of  80,000(Yen) (subject to change). In past history of the program, at least one UIC student has been awarded the JASSO scholarship annually. 

 

Requirements:

At least a 2.8 GPA

Completion of JPN 104 before leaving for program (you do not have to be completed with JPN 104 at time of application)

Must have at least junior-standing for academic year abroad

Must be a currently-enrolled, degree-seeking student at UIC
