Frequently Asked Questions about
Displaying Banners at UIC

We would like to hang banners at UIC. Who can advise us?

Laura Swetin is your contact person (banners@uic.edu or 312-413-1893).

How much do banners cost?

Prices vary from one vender to another. A double-sided vertical banner in vinyl typically runs between $90 and $125. A double-sided horizontal banner costs from $600 to $800. Eco-friendly options will cost more.

What is the cost of banner installation and removal?

Paying for banner installation and removal is the responsibility of the sponsoring unit. Prices are based upon carpenters’ time and material and may vary according to the availability of equipment, staffing, and weather conditions.

The following prices are estimates from Facilities Management assuming optimal conditions, including one week lead time, favorable weather, and available staffing. Installation during extreme weather will be more expensive.

Banner installation:

Vertical Banners

  • 4 banners $240.00
  • 6 banners $360.00
  • 8 banners $480.00

Horizontal Banners $90.00 each

Banner removal:

Vertical Banners

  • 4 banners $240.00
  • 6 banners $360.00
  • 8 banners $480.00

Horizontal Banners $90.00 each

Note: If banner installation and removal occur in a single location at the same time, the cost will be shared between the sponsoring units.

Can students display banners at UIC?

Student groups and registered student organizations typically hang horizontal banners in the Quad. These service requests are placed through a college or the Campus Programs Department in Student Affairs. The Campus Programs contact person is Sophia Magill: smagil2@uic.edu or 312-413-5079.

Are any locations “off-limits” for banners?

UIC recently learned that no banners may hang within 150’ of the expressways. Although formerly used for display of horizontal banners, the UIC/Halsted “L” stop is now off-limits.

All the major thoroughfares on UIC’s East Side – Halsted, Racine, Morgan, Harrison, Taylor, and Roosevelt – are reserved by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for External Affairs for key UIC messaging. Light poles along these streets are off-limits for UIC units and organizations. The dimensions of banners in these locations differ from those that apply for approved on-campus locations. (See Guidelines for Banner Display at UIC.)

The major West Side thoroughfares – Ashland, Paulina, Damen, Taylor, Polk, and Roosevelt – are located within the Illinois Medical District (IMD), which has its own banner standards. While not off-limits, UIC coordinates with the IMD to obtain permission to hang banners in these locations. IMD banner dimensions differ from those that apply for approved on-campus locations. (See Guidelines for Banner Display at UIC.)

The Master-Key Maps of the East and West Sides indicate all the locations currently approved and equipped to accommodate banner installations.
