Illinois Prevention Research Center: Partnering to Promote Health in Urban Communities

Core Research Project

The Illinois Prevention Research Center's core research project for 2004-2009 is a community-based implementation study focused on promoting healthy lifestyles in the Greater Lawn community of Southwest Chicago, which includes the Chicago neighborhoods of West Lawn, Chicago Lawn, and Gage Park.

Called Making the Connection, the project is based on the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), which demonstrated that an intensive clinic-based lifestyle intervention focused on weight loss, through healthy eating and increased physical activity, had a powerful impact in the prevention of type 2 diabetes.

The overall goal of the project is to conduct an implementation study of a community-tailored version of the DPP's intensive lifestyle intervention delivered in community settings by community residents. The study targets Greater Lawn community residents at increased risk of type 2 diabetes based on their body mass index and other risk factors.

The director and lead investigator for this project is Laurie Ruggiero, PhD.
