UIC Receives State of Illinois Recycling Grant

A recycling grant opportunity that IESP’s Susan Kaplan identified and pursued, working in partnership with UIC’s Cynthia Klein-Banai (who now heads up UIC’s Office of Sustainability), Darlene Ebel of Facility Information Management, Pablo Acevedo of Facility Management and others, has borne fruit: UIC has been awarded a $55,456 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Recycling Grant Program. The grant will enable UIC to expand its recycling program by purchasing new recycling containers, raising awareness of the recycling program among students, faculty and staff, and increasing participation in the program, with the goal of increasing UIC’s overall recycling rate. The grant will also enable the hiring of two students to work on the recycling program. Strengthening and expanding the university’s recycling program was one of the primary goals identified by the Chancellor’s Task Force on Sustainability for increasing sustainability at UIC.
