Survey Responses

We appreciate your feedback and comments through the Online Student Satisfaction Survey.

Below are some responses to the feedback you have provided:

Comment: Why are there so few free classes??

Response: We offer a large variety of free Group Fitness classes throughout the week at both facilities. This includes free Spin classes at the SRF. The schedule for these classes can be found on our website - http://screc.ops.uic.edu/rec/group_dropin_schedule.htm.

Comment: It is extremely hot and I routinely feel dizzy when doing cardio due to the heat.

Response: It is our goal to make sure the area is comfortable for all. We did have an incident of "extreme heat" for a few days in early January when we had unseasonably warm outside temperatures and we had a hard time keeping the buildings as comfortable as usual. While this is the first comment we have had on this issue‚ we will be mindful of the temperatures in the weight and fitness area.

Comment: At most times of the day‚ it is absurdly busy and I can never find open equipment that I want to use.

Response: Our facilities get really busy between 4:00 and 8:00pm. During other periods of the day there are usually plenty of pieces of equipment available. There is hardly ever a time (even during this peak period) when all our cardio equipment is in use. Should you experience this during your visits‚ please make one of the Recreation facility staff aware.

Comment: Since this is not technically a survey of all things pertaining to the rec center‚ I will add additional suggestions here. I would suggest not closing the gym so long during the winter break. That is normally the time when I do have extra time to go to the gym. Additionally‚ since this is a commuter school mostly‚ a lot of people would still be around the area during this time too‚ who may also use the gym.

Response: The University operates “essential services” during the school breaks. Many other locations and services have reduced or limited service hours. Campus Recreations is one of those other services. This down time allows us to arrange for maintenance which would be very disruptive during the time that school is in session. This is fairly standard operating procedure at most campus recreation facilities around the country.

The recreation centers are primarily funded through student fees with the overwhelming numbers of users being students. Campus Recreation provides many opportunities to engage several hundred of our student population as student employees. Most of our jobs in the facilities are staffed by students using part-time shifts. During the winter break‚ the staff size is significantly reduced due to the unavailability of our student workforce.

Comment: Campus Recreation need to provide better customer service.

Response: Campus Recreation is committed to providing excellent service in all our facilities and programs. We are always striving to make our staff more customer service oriented. One way we show our commitment is by requiring the student and professional staff to attend mandatory Customer Service Workshops. We just completed a workshop series in April‚ 2009. We will continuously focus our efforts on meeting and exceeding the expectations of all of our patrons.

Comment: “I heard students have to pay some fee for summer semester access to facilities. Can’t it be free for students who registered for FALL and SPRING semester?”

Response: The cost for student access to Campus Recreation services and facilities is included in the students fees for the semesters for which they are enrolled. Students who are enrolled and paying the appropriate student fees for the 8-week Summer Session have access to Campus Recreation facilities and services. Students who are not enrolled in the 8-week Summer Session are required to pay $50.00 summer fee in order to have access.
