Students Gain Financial Insight

Campus Housing invited residents of Commons West (CMW) to expand their life skills at a Financial Planning Workshop. The students listened to a talk and then participated in a quiz to assess their financial knowledge. The quiz answers were explained and discussion continued helping residents connect financial concepts to the choices and decisions that arise daily. Participants indicated that by the conclusion of the program they increased both their financial vocabulary and understanding of sound practices.

Agent of Peace

In an effort to further promote a safe and inclusive campus environment, the Wellness Center launched the Agent of Peace initiative. The primary mission of an Agent of Peace (Agent) is to bring peaceful communication and behaviors into all areas of life; online and off. Agents are social leaders fostering inclusive behaviors of acceptance, respect, cooperation and unity. Over 200 students who volunteered to become an Agent participated in a thorough training program, took a pledge and received a special t-shirt.

Fit for Entrepreneurs

Students utilizing the support services of the African American Academic Network (AAAN) had the unique opportunity to connect with entrepreneurs and University of Illinois Alumni Sean and Maria Armstead. The Armstead's are the owners of Phenomenal Fitness, a premier personal training studio, located in the South Loop neighborhood. The 25 participants gained insight on how their studies at UIC can directly support starting a successful business. Additionally, the students received a complimentary workout session.

Engagement Benefits Others

For the past three years Student Leadership Development Volunteer Services has partnered with The Night Ministry. The Night Ministry is a local organization that works to provide health care, housing and human connection to members of the community struggling with poverty or homelessness. UIC student volunteers perform service with the organization on a regular basis. During a recent visit, our students tracked inventory of and sorted personal-hygiene products that had been collected through various donation sites including our campus. The items were then packaged into personal care kits that will be distributed to those who rely on the Night Ministry's resources.

The UIC Experience

Our students have been seen volunteering, participating in public forums, visiting museums and attending sporting events throughout Chicagoland. These types of experiences and more can earn a student certification in The UIC Experience program. A student you know may benefit from a reminder to submit their documentation for the semester. The simple process requires that students document six experiences - two from each of the three key areas:

Urban Exploration
Inquiring Minds
Community

Submitting documentation is fast and easy through the online system. The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 25, 2014. If a student you know requires more information, direct them to www.uicexperience.uic.edu.
