Student Organizations Give Dazzling Performances

The Illinois Room of Student Center East was filled with enthusiastic students celebrating the rich diversity found within the campus community. Larger than ever, the annual Cultural Showcase featured representatives from twelve student organizations. Each student organization exhibited their heritage through an engaging performance. The creative segments often utilized combinations of spoken word, dance, and music. The student performances had all the makings of a big ticket show; complex choreography, fascinating rhythms, beautiful fabrics and dedicated performers.Three UIC staff judges along with the student audience selected three winning performances. The three best performances were: 3rd Place - Dhamaal,
2nd Place - Filipinos in Alliance, and 1st Place - Movimiento Latino.

Twelfth Annual Benefit a Success

The Supporting Excellence Endowment (S.E.E.) Benefit was a spectacular evening for a great cause. Friends of UIC and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs generously contributed to the endowment used to fund scholarships for deserving student leaders. The festive evening saluting the S.E.E. scholars consisted of a reception, dinner, concert featuring the Four Tops and decadent dessert reception. The S.E.E. Scholarship recipients were selected from a highly competitive group of applicants. The 2012-13 recipients each boasted a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average in addition to notable student leadership on campus and demonstrated involvement in the community. The five recipients were awarded funding toward their education at UIC.

Friday Night Live (FNL)

Students avoided the winter blahs that can accompany overcast days and chilly nights by attending Friday Night Live (FNL). The Winter Wonderfest themed evening of activity boasted everything from UIC Radio broadcasts to Foosball competitions and video games in Student Center West (SCW). Students compared their drawings from a caricature artist, expressed their creativity through crafts and won coveted prizes. The hot chocolate and cotton candy stations proved to be popular for not only treats, but as areas to meet and network with peers.

LOL @ UIC

Saturday Night Live comedian Kenan Thompson visited campus to headline the first "LOL @ UIC". Students began arriving at the UIC Forum about an hour before the show in hopes of receiving a free pair of touch screen gloves adorned with the event logo. Many in the audience were thrilled to see the television personality live and his performance did not disappoint. The weather was fairly brutal the evening of the program and students expressed gratitude that Campus Programs helped them avoid the elements by providing a special shuttle service to and from the UIC Forum.

Helpful Testing Services Tool

Did you know that transferring scores into the Blackboard Learn Grade Center just became easier? Until recently, faculty manually entered the scores provided by the Office of Testing Services. The Instructional Technology Lab has established a set of illustrated instructions for uploading student grades from the Office of Testing Services into the Grade Center. The instructions demonstrate how to:

  • Download student information from your course site in Blackboard Learn
  • Import the student information into an Excel Spreadsheet
  • Import the scores from the Scantron alongside the student information
  • Upload the file of student information and scores into the Grade Center

For more information about this exciting tool, contact the Office of Testing Services (312) 996-0919.
