Pop Out World: Popular Media & Queer Identity
1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Institute for Humanities, Lower Level, Stevenson Hall
Since the 1960's, queer people have become increasingly visible in the
media. Queer identities in community life and politics may rely in the
21st century on the prevailing media landscape. The paradoxes of visibility
are many: spurring tolerance through harmful stereotyping, diminishing
isolation at the cost of activism, trading assimilation for equality,
converting radicalism into a market niche. As part of a series of Media/Queered
events, a colloquium during March will explore visibility and its discontents.
Participants include John Nguyet, City University of Hong Kong, Amit Kama,
Tel Aviv University, Vincent Doyle, Montreal, and Deirdre McCloskey, UIC.
