MISSION

The UIC Women's Leadership Symposium was founded to make leadership development more accessible to women on campus and to address the unique issues faced by minority women.


KEYNOTE ADDRESS: A personal Journey in a Social Context

DR. CHARLOTTE "TOBY" TATE, is currently the Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at UIC. Tate joined UIC in April 1999 as Dean of the College of Health and Human Development Sciences and Professor of Kinesiology. Tate's faculty career began at the Baylor College of Medicine, where she advanced to the rank of Associate Professor. She moved into administration at the University of Houston where she progressed from a Professor of Pharmacology, to the head of the Department of Pharmacological and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and ultimately served as that university's Vice Provost for Academic Programs and Faculty Affairs. A former President of the American College of Sports Medicine, Tate is a leading researcher on the influence of exercise on the biology of the heart in advanced age.

LUNCHEON ADDRESS: Balancing Work and Family: A Framework for Success
MARGARET JOHNSSON

MARGARET JOHNSSON, President and CEO of The Johnsson Group Inc, received her Bachelor's from UIC's College of Business Administration and her MBA from Northwestern's J.L Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Before she started her own strategic and financial consulting firm, Johnsson was an operations analyst at Beatrice Companies and held several management positions at Kraft. She has received numerous awards and print coverage for her "breakthrough" approach for balancing work and family life at her company.

L.E.A.D. WITH STYLE

Teri Blain, True Colors Core Trainer- This highly interactive workshop will utilize "True Colors" temperament concepts to teach the basics of Leadership by Temperament Style and Dynamic Leadership Principles. Participants will discover their own temperaments, "natural" leadership style, and how to motivate others according to temperament.

 

SKILLS OF POWER

Freida Curry, Center for Urban Business- "It is difficult to become a leader if you have no power!!" Skills of Power is a dynamic, motivating, and interactive workshop that will provide the participants with the tools to master the six Skills of Power. Participants will learn Vision, Perspective/Attitude, Effective Listening, Negotiation, Asking Empowering Questions, and Making Powerful Choices.

 

iBreathe STRESS AWAY

Sonji Barnes, College of Medicine- Participants will learn what stress is, how we contribute to our stress levels, and proactive techniques to de-stress. Participants will walk away prepared to deal with unexpected life events with an arsenal of fun, innovative and proven techniques to reduce the stress in our lives.

 

CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Caryn Bills, Dispute Resolution Services and William Jones, Library- Are you plagued with conflict in the workplace or at home? This workshop will help you resolve conflicts through understanding your conflict resolution style, improving your communication skills and enhancing your ability to generate solution-focused options.

 

WOMEN'S FORUM: DEBUNKING FINANCIAL MYTHS

Kendra A. Smith, TIAA-CREF Chicago Regional Office- This workshop will debunk common myths that prevent women from investing in their financial future. This workshop will cover why women's retirement plans should be different from men's, seven reasons why women should save more, and the impact of career interruptions on investment planning.

ALTERNATIVE REMEDIES FOR MENOPAUSE

Dr. Elena Barengolts, Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism- Learn about alternative herbal remedies for menopause, what herbs really work, and other medical conditions associated with menopause. How to collaborate with your traditional physician to minimize side effects and drug interactions will also be discussed.

 

MANAGING AND CULTIVATING DIVERSITY IN THE WORKPLACE

Michelle D. James, Counseling Center- Practical ways to develop or enhance a diverse climate in the workplace will be offered. The meaning of diversity, outlining its purpose and illustrating common problems associated with exclusion from the workplace will be covered. This workshop will dispel the myths associated with the practice and mandates of Affirmative Action.

 

BALANCING DIFFERENT ROLES

Liz Keys, Erin Hardin & Eryn Weber-Shiffin, Counseling Center- Women maintain a number of different roles related to work, family and community responsibilities. Participants will consider the different roles they occupy and how these roles positively or negatively impact their lives. Coping strategies will also be discussed.

 

INVESTMENT STRATEGIES 101

Cherie Ensminger, ING Aetna Financial Services- Has the stock market volatility made you terrified of investing? This workshop will cover the nuts and bolts for investment strategies even in today's market. Learn about the future power of money, dollar cost averaging and how to evaluate mutual funds.

MOVING INTO ADMINISTRATION FOR SUPPORT STAFF

Stefan D.P. Howard & Sharon Coleman, Staff Advisory Council, Diann Washington & Len Grinsted, Human Resources- The panelists will discuss how personal and professional experiences can be "the key minus the degree" for support staff. The ways in which testing, computer skills, and a positive CAN'T BE HELD BACK attitude are essential for advancement will be covered.

 

CAN YOU SEE THE TRIANGLES? A SUPERB TOOL FOR MANAGEMENT

Stephanie Ferrera, Work Systems Consultant- Gossip, divided camps, and politics are examples of the labyrinth of interlocking triangles formed in organizations in response to conflict. This workshop will teach participants how to trace conflicts to their origins and how to use direct communication for resolution.

 

SPIRITUAL LIFE AT WORK

Mary Sinclair, AHS School of Kinesiology- Participants will explore their inner personal meaning, its expression, and impact in the work setting. Guided imagery, personal reflection, and journaling experiences will be used for reconnecting with inner resources. Ways in which living personal meaning can be integrated into the world of work will be explored.

 

SMART WOMEN FINISH RICH ™

Gwen Cohen, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter- Through this workshop, participants will learn the steps for achieving financial security. Participants will learn how to put their money where their values are, assess their financial standing, discover the Power of the Latte™ factor, and build financial baskets for their retirement, security and dreams.

 

HEREDITY AND CANCER: ARE YOU AT RISK?

Dr. Lee Shulman, National Center of Excellence for Women's Health- This workshop will review the recent developments in genetics and how they pertain to women's healthcare. Included will be cancer genetics and prenatal diagnosis, as well as the impact of genetic technology on routine aspects of preventative, diagnostic and therapeutic options for women.

 

SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEWING IN 5 EASY STEPS

Julie Hays, Alumni Career Center- Now that your resume or networking contacts have gotten you an interview, what do you do? Learn tips and resources to increase your chances of turning an interview into an offer through each step of the interviewing process.

 

REDUCING YOUR POTENTIAL FOR BURNOUT

Barbara Distler, Counseling Center- Learn about the causes and forms of burnout along with risk factors. Discuss why women are at risk and distinguish burnout from stress. Participants will identify their own signals for burnout and learn practical steps for reducing or preventing burnout.

 

SURVIVING GOING BACK TO SCHOOL

Bernadine Canada, Judith Cohen, & Diana Sharp, Academic Center for Excellence- Are you considering going back to school; put off the decision until a better time; or have you already enrolled? This workshop will help you put all of the pieces together to make your educational endeavors a success. You will have an opportunity to assess your academic readiness as well as learn about the resources available to returning students.

 

WHO ARE YOU?

Rose Green Thomas, Urban Health Program- This interactive workshop will explore how self-identity leads you to where you are in life experiences and steers you where you want to go. Exercises will target improving self-worth, renewing the spirit, and reviewing lessons learned on the elements of success.

BACK ON TRACK: REIGNING IN HIGH INTEREST DEBT

Marilyn Stangeland, Consumer Credit Counseling of Greater Chicago- Participants will learn how to examine their current financial situation, acquire financial reports, discover options to pay off high interest debt, and implement a Money Action Plan.

 

CRASHING THROUGH THE GLASS CEILING

Carlos Drazen, Department of Disability and Human Development- This workshop will focus on identifying solutions and strategies for greater recognition for African American women with disabilities. A brief history of Black women with disabilities and reasons for lack of recognition in the Women's, Civil Rights and Disabilities movement will be provided.

 

STAMP OUT TYPE II DIABETES

Rosemary Reeves, Rue Galleree- Do you have a history of diabetes in your family? Type II Diabetes is a problem in the African American community especially for women. Learn about the importance of diet and exercise for promoting the body's improved usage of glucose.

 

PRESENTING YOUR PROFESSIONAL STRENGTHS

Claudia Delestowicz, Alumni Career Center- Today's job market requires workers who can meet new challenges. Participants will assess current strengths, transferable skills and areas for development in order to meet career goals. Strategies for packaging and presenting accomplishments will be covered.

 

GETTING WHAT YOU NEED AND WANT FROM WORK

Mary Anne Buckman, Alumni Career Center- Did you hope to get more out of your career? This workshop will help you address the disconnect between your needs, values and wants versus what your work provides. Participants will generate strategies to get what they need and want from work.

 

MEDICAL ADVANCES TO ASSIST WEIGHT LOSS

Dr. Charles Baum, Nutrition and Wellness Center- Learn about the new medical treatments available that will enhance the positive effects of lifestyle change for weight management. Learn about why the health risks are greater for women than men and how to avoid these known health risks.

 

MENTORING AND SHADOWING

Clara Awe, Pharmacy Practice & Judy Judy, Institute for Transformative Synergism- This workshop will discuss mentoring and administrative shadowing programs as effective tools for the new breed of women in leadership positions. Strategies for empowerment, issues for women of color, and leadership styles will be covered.
