Amherst College Women's Center is a place and a resource open to all members of the Amherst College community. It is available for anyone to use as a place to study, hold meetings or use as a resource (great library of books, magazines, and free condoms). Many groups on campus use the center on a regular basis for meetings or activities.

Brigham Young University Women's Services and Resources Office begins their site with images of diverse women with stories to tell of their experiences at BYU. You can also learn about current and upcoming events sponsored by the office on this site. (I would have liked access to an archive of past events as well but it did not seem to be available). Links for services and for programs are apparently in the works. I suspect this page will be difficult for users with low-end machines or browsers to navigate.

California Institute of Technology Women's Center - The Center works for the advancement of women in science and engineering. It operates as a central meeting place, information resource, program center, and support for the Caltech community. Programs emphasize issues such as career & family issues; career choices; scientific presentations; mentoring and networking, gender communication, women's health and family issues such as child care, dual career parenting. The Center works to support campus women's organizations. Finally, they promote & provide programs for young women considering careers in science and engineering.

California State University Chico Women's Center. This page only has information on the department that oversees the Center and the phone number. If there was more at CSU Chico's site, I couldn't find it except for a 1995 editorial in the campus paper.

California State University Dominguez Hills Women's Center The Center offers many services to the campus community. Students can find information on a variety of issues ranging from women's health to domestic violence. The center also provides counseling and referral services and sponsors workshops and guest speakers throughout the year. This site has an extensive collection of links.

Carnegie Mellon University's Women's Center This site is quite small. It discusses their Coffee Talk discussion program and library resources. The library's holdings are indexed here by subject, by author, and by title.

Duke University Women's Center works to transform discriminatory institutional structures at Duke by educating the university community about gender-related issues and the intersections of gender with race,class, and culture. Our services include programming and events, advising and outreach, information and referral, production of VOICES Magzine, educational and leadership development opportunities, a 3000+ volume lending library, and work-study and volunteer opportunities. Housed in the Women's Center, the office of Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) provides 24-hour crisis counseling and advocacy to female and male survivors of rape, sexual assault, attempted assault, relationship violence, or child sexual abuse and to their friends, partners, and family members..

Earlham College Women's Center provides a place for women to meet to discuss women's issues and concerns, hold classes and tutoring sessions, or just to hang out. Special quiet hours set aside daily. The Center publishes a magazine (We Speak) once a term.Every spring, the center sponsors a Women's Spring Festival, which brings guest speakers and women performers to campus.

Emory Women's Center strives to serve the Emory campus and citizens of Atlanta. They provide programming, resource materials and a strong informational network with a particular focus on the well-being of women in all aspects of their lives. Some of their programs include: Healthy Women 2000 Lunchtime Series, Women's Writers' Group, Women's Sexuality Discussion Group, and Choices (Emory's Undergraduate Feminist Forum). This is a well designed site with interesting links.

Franklin and Marshall College Women's Center provides programs about women's contributions to society, advocates for needs/concerns of women, offers referrals, provides resource materials about women's issues, and sponsors support programs for women on campus. Their programs include parties, movie nights, weekly discussions, rape/sexual assault support groups, and self-defense classes. The Center maintains a lending library of books about women's and gender issues.

Georgetown University Women's Center provides both prevention and consciousness-raising education as well as crisis intervention. They offer a library of books and other printed resources; provide a referral service for individuals who seek counseling, legal, and medical assistance and crisis intervention; and sponsor support and consciousness-raising groups, events, and speaker. The Center also publishes a monthly newsletter.

Hamline University Upper Midwest Women's History Center encourages the study of all women's history in both formal and informal educational settings. They seek to raise awareness of women's history as a pathway to equity for girls and women; advocate for the inclusion of women's history in formal and informal educational programs; support gender analysis as a method for evaluating projects that involve girls andwomen; and act to bring together diverse networks to initiate programs relating to women's history.

Idaho State University's Janet C. Anderson Gender Resource Center is a program of Student Affairs at Idaho State University. The Center is a place where students, prospective students, faculty, staff and their families can access services for crisis, educational resources and gender issues programming. The Center seeks to raise the awareness concerning gender issues and to promote this awareness in policies, services and programs throughout the University.The Janet C. Anderson Gender Resource Center is the home of the Project Hope Advocate Program and the 24-hour crisis and information line. The Center also provides volunteer opportunities for both ISU graduate and undergraduate students, as well as campus and community education and a resource library.

Indiana University Office for Women's Affairs is an advocacy office for all women -- faculty, staff, and student. The staff help to resolve grievances and complaints; provide support and referral services; present educational programs; offer short-term individual and group counseling; and provide information, support, and intervention to women faculty, staff, and students about such matters as salary, promotion & tenure decisions, career development strategies, workplace issues, or educational opportunity.

Iowa State University Margaret Sloss Women's Center provides support to individuals who are experiencing discrimination, sexual harassment, abuse, or need someone to talk to. The Center is a space for women to meet, network, study, watch TV, and relax. Center staff offer programs on topics such as Assertiveness, Leadership, Self-esteem, Women's Health, Women in Society, Global Feminism, Heterosexism/ Homophobia, Racism, Sexism, Sexual Assault, and Domestic Violence. Discussion and support groups listed are offered (e.g., Adult Women Students, Latinas, and Siblings of People with AIDS).

Kent State University Women's Resource Center The Center offers programs and services aimed at advocacy, education, information and referrals in order to enhance the quality of the educational experience and professional life for women students, faculty and staff of all campuses.

Lawrence University's GLBT & Women's Resource Room supplements the university library's collection with books, magazines, pamphlets, videos, course syllabi, ephemera, and historical documents. All are welcome to use the Resource Room whether for academic research or for personal edification.

Mankato State University Women's Center provides educational outreach programs, advocacy, sexual assault resources and prevention, sexual harassment training, resource library, Non-Traditional student support, , and volunteer opportunities. This site offers information on their quarterly news letter, Brown Bag Lunches, Feminist Action Grants and scholarship information.

Mansfield University Women's Center for Living and Learning houses books, journals, videos and audiocassettes on a wide range of women's concerns. Dedicated student and staff volunteers keep the center open, check out materials, and answer visitors' questions. Campus organizations use the Center to hold meetings. Special events in the Center have included discussions and workshops on stereotyping of women and men, breast cancer, and HIV/AIDS awareness as well as exhibits during the annual Women's Arts and Culture Events.

Massachusetts Instittute of Technology. Actually, they don't have a Center. This site talks about efforts being made toward developing an office at MIT. Sadly, the information appears not to have been updated since April of 1995. MIT's Counseling and Support Services has a Staff Assistant for Women Students. She acts as a resource and referral source, develops workshops, discussions and support groups around the specific interests and needs of MIT women students and is "Caretaker" for the women students' lounge, the Cheney Room.

Middle Tenessee State University's June Anderson Women's Center sponsors ongoing support groups focusing on women's issues, including a group for mature women/adult learners. The JAWC houses a modest library on women's issues and maintains an extensive and current resource file. They publish "Speaking of Women," a newsletter with articles targeting women, and a Calendar of Events at the beginning of each term. They cosponsor monthly free legal clinics for the MTSU community and employsa full-time licensed counselor to provide confidential, individual counseling.

Montana State University Women's Center promotes greater responsiveness to the needs of women. The center is open to all students, staff, faculty, and community members (male and female). The center is a place for students to stop by, relax, and explore their concerns, issues, and options through information and conversation. Campus and community members are encouraged to become involved in the center through work study, volunteer, and intership positions. The Geraldine Fenn Memorial Library is in the Women's Center and contains a large variety of reference materials. Weekly Sack Lunch Seminars feature local, state, and sometimes national speakers.

Murray State University Women's Center, opened in 1992, provides support, education to women facing new challenges, opportunities, and demands This includes short-term (1-8 sessions) counseling; a resource library for research and self help; support and skill-building groups; workshops and programs; roundtable discussions; campus safety programs; a peer advocates program and an annual conference celebrating Women's History Month.

North Carolina State University Women's Center provides advocacy, information and programming for and about women and gender equity. Time and space are provided for support or network groups to meet in a safe, supportive, and confidential atmosphere. Staff offer services such as informal consulting on advocacy issues, information, referrals, and confidential assistance with problems such as sexual harassment, sexual assault, and relationship issues. Programs reflect a wide range of viewpoints about women's concerns and gender equity.

Northwestern University Women's Center recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. In addition to resource referral and educational services, the Women's Center offers individual counseling and advocacy for survivors of sexual assault, sexual harassment, childhood sexual abuse, and discrimination. Their counseling services include short-term crisis intervention, ongoing counseling (for survivors of childhood sexual abuse, relationship violence & sexual assault), support groups, and drop-in problem solving counseling. The web site also lists a variety of events sponsored by the Center.

Ohio State University Women's Place is a office under Academic Affairs that serves as a hub for women's issues on campus. We coordinate a website, which includes a calendar of events and a clearinghouse of resources for women on campus. We also provide support services for women's groups, such as advertisement and meeting space, and we also help develop and house web sites for those groups. We also work with The President's Council on Women's Issues doing policy work for the President and Provost's offices. We are currently developing two cohort projects focused on retention of women faculty and students.

Plymouth State CollegeWomen's Services And Gender Resource Center is a source of education, resources and services for students, faculty and staff. The Center raises awareness of and combats gender and power inequities, as well as offers programs and leadership opportunities to empower women. They provide a full range of services to victims/survivors of sexual assault, harassment, and relationship violence. They house an extensive video, magazine, and book lending library. Groups for lesbians and bisexuals, a parenting network as well as women's empowerment groups are offered based on interest. Workshops are offered on topics such as assertiveness, body image, gender communication , self defense, and understanding sexual harassment

Princeton University Women's Center seeks to provide a supportive atmosphere for women; to raise awareness and promote discussion on issues concerning women and gender; and to promote institutional and social change in order to expand opportunities for women at Princeton and beyond. They offer educational, cultural, and social programs and their space provides a library, a meeting space, a kitchenette, comfortable seating, and administrative offices.

Rutgers University Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) is a research, education and public service center. They promote greater understanding and knowledge about women's relationship to politics and government and enhance women's influence and leadership in public life. Major programs include: Information Services (current information and analysis on the developing women's political movement); quadrennial national Forum for Women State Legislators; Young Women's Leadership Initiative (designed to prepare young women for public leadership); .and research focusing on women in public office.

State University of New York College at Oswego The Women's Center at SUNY Oswego serves as a resource for the University community and an advocate for women of all backgrounds, races, classes, ages, sexual orientations, political and religious beliefs. We strive to promote awareness and pride in women's individuality, and to enrich academic, cultural and social experiences at SUNY Oswego. The Women's Center contributes to making a non-discriminatory and positive campus environment by working to reduce barriers to women.

St. Cloud University Women's Center. This Minnesota campus provides a range of programs on topics such as sexism on campus, sexual assault, work and family issues, and women's health. Special programs include: "Women on Wednesday" (a weekly noon-hour lecture series), and National Women's History Month. They provide advocacy for victims of sexual harassment, sexual assault, harassment based on sexual orientation, and relationship violence. In addition, their offer a sexual violence prevention program required for Freshmen students enrolled in nine credits or more. The Center also houses a small, specialized resource library.

Sonoma State University Women's Resource Center states their mission is to promote gender equity through education, support and advocacy; to enrich the campus environment to make SSU a truly outstanding place for all women students; and to coordinate Women's History Month and other educational programs.

Stanford University Women's Center. Not much here so far except their location; contact information for groups affiliated with the Center, special interest groups, and publications; and lists of women's sites on the Web.

The Tennessee Tech Women's Center opened its doors in January 1993, with a mission to empower women in the student body, on the faculty, and on the staff of the University community through education, the dissemination of information, and consultation. The Center's mission includes coordinating and collaborating with other functional areas of the University to provide a range of services that will enhance the lives of women within the university community and within the larger society. The Center exists to advocate for and to address issues which will improve the lives of women and men.

Towson State University Women's Center is a place where women can drop in at any time and meet other women while obtaining information about women's issues. The Center features a comfortable lounge and an extensive library. The Center also offers lectures, films, and workshops.

Trinity College Women's Center has a tiny WWW site. They offer educational, social, and cultural programming, seek to promote self-determination and awareness of women's rights and issues; redress gender inequities; and encourage understanding among women of different classes, cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and sexual orientations. The Center also houses the sexual assault peer educators and peer theater group and the Eating Concerns Committee, a group designed to educate the campus about eating disorders.

University of California, Berkley Women's Resource Center enhances academic achievement and personal development of women at Berkeley. They facilitate formation of support groups and networking among women's groups; assist student groups in developing/ implementing programs and activities; act as a problem-solving and crisis intervention resource; advocate for changes in campus policies/ practices which impact women; serve as a clearinghouse for information and resources pertaining to women; provide a specialized library collection; and offer skill-building internships for women, including leadership and advocacy opportunities.

University of California, Davis Women's Resources and Research Center sponsors a wide variety of popular and scholarly lectures, workshops, forums, films, conferences, performances and events of special interest to women. They offer support and discussion groups for campus women with common interests or concerns, as well as dvice and assistance to individuals, departments, and organizations planning activities on women or gender.


University of California, San Francisco Women's Center offers a small site which highlights their goals and services. The Center seeks to increase campus awareness of needs of women; and to encourage the achievement by women of their intellectual, professional, career and personal goals. They offer free events such as lectures, films, and slideshows of particular interest to women, featuring local, state and nationally-known speakers; personal, professional, and skill-building workshops and conferences; support groups; campus and community information and referral services; and a lending library.


University of California, Santa BarbaraWomen's Center provides a climate in which women can celebrate and cultivate common strengths as well as recognize their cultural and individual differences. The site describes student peer groups for a Rape Prevention Education Program and a Sexual Harassment Prevention Education Program as well as services by their Professional staff. The center includes a Re-Entry/Non-Traditional Student Lounge and the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transsexual Transgendered Student Lounge.


University of Colorado Women's Resource Center This is a very nicely designed site. This site describes their volunteer program, an indexed and searchable list of the 700 books in their Library, the feminist scholars program, and details the programs and services offered at the center. They even sell WRC Sports Bras! The Center offers special attention to women who have been sexually harassed. The web site also provides a calendar of events.


University of Connecticut Women's Center Their mission is to advocate, educate, and provide support services for the achievement of women's equity. Special attention is focused on women who face additional challenges (e.g., race, class, sexual identity, etc.). The staff serves as advocates for people facing issues of sexual discrimination, sexual harassment, and sexual or relationship violence. The Center provides information, referral and/or direct support on issues pertinent to women. Staff are available to provide training and workshops on a variety of issues and sponsor speakers, events, conferences, films and concerts.


University of Idaho Women's Center provides support, educational programs, consultation, and resources with a particular focus on gender sensitivity, and undertakes activities which work toward the elimination of prejudice, bias, harassment, and gender-based violence. They offer a newsletter and a list of the noon programs via the UI Gopher Server.


University of Illinois at Chicago's Office of Women's Affairs. Yes, we know we are referencing ourselves but this page is linked to a Student Affairs resource site and wanted to make sure visitors from that site saw our name on this list. Our Office provides a variety of services and programs. Please explore the rest of our site to learn more. We have a library, short-term counseling, advocacy services, an annual women's leadership symposium, an annual women's history month series, and more.


University of Iowa Women's Resource Action Center offers a newsletter, library, and referral service. They also provide support and discussion groups, educational programs, conferences, and advocacy support on issues of sexual and racial harrassment.


University of Kansas Emily Taylor Women's Resource Center provides career information; a sexual assault prevention & education program; and programs on topics such as health, career exploration, assertiveness, and time management. Staff provide assistance and consultation about personal issues and concerns. In addition, the Center's library includes a collection of 130 notebooks containing categorized newspaper and magazine articles.

University of Maryland Baltimore County The Women's Center exists to assist all women in achieving their full potential in education, career and personal life through academic and intellectual growth, professional development and personal empowerment.

University of Miami Women's Center offers programs, services, and resources and provides a safe place for all women in the University community to congregate, to explore and discuss topics of interest, and to get involved in women's programming and service delivery on campus. The Center serves as a clearinghouse for resources and referrals, sponsors programs, coordinates a Mentoring Program pairing undergraduate women with female faculty and administrators. The Center also coordinates Women's History Month and International Women's Day.


University of Michigan's Center for the Education of Women
is devoted to service, research, and advocacy. CEW has a long history as a model of the comprehensive, university-based women's center. CEW sponsors a year-round calendar of programs and events, and a full range of services, including counseling, internships, scholarships, and library services. The Center also sponsors research focusing primarily on the roles of education and work in the lives of women, and has a number of publications available.


University of Minnesota's Women's Center Established in 1959 as the first women's center on a college campus in the U.S., the MWC focused its early work on continuing education needs of women. The center has a rich tradition of successful women's advocacy and student development initiatives via a partnership with Women's Studies Department. The Center closed in 1991 but was re-established in 1993 with a renewed focus on women students. It's mission is to provide leadership to enhance living, working and learning environments for women students, with special commitment to women of color, women with disabilities, lesbians, bisexual women and re-entry women. Partnership with other University units and programs providing services to women is central to the work of the Center.


University of Mississippi Sarah Isom Center for Women's Studies has a three-fold mission: curriculum development, programming, and research on women/ women's issues. Courses are offered through the Center and in coordination with other departments. Regular programs include a brown bag series and Women's Awareness Week co-sponsored with the local hospital. Research focuses primarily on Southern women.


University of Nebraska at Lincoln Women's Center A division of Student Involvement, the Center's goal is to assist women with a successful, positive college experience. They offer programs and services to enhance educational experiences of women. Their library contains over 2000 volumes and several journals. Center staff provides individual counseling with trained professionals or peer counselors and weekly support groups. The Center also offers a lounge area for studying, relaxing or watching educational videos.


University of Nevada, Las Vegas Jean Nidetch Women's Center The Center's purpose is to promote an understanding of the diverse, fundamental and significant contributions women make at UNLV and in society. Their Information and Referral Network helps people reach various campus & community services. A number of grant funded programs provide workshops, groups, internships, and publications focusing primarily on women's issues and experiences. It provides a home base for diverse student groups and a comfortable reading room setting for exploration of personal and educational interests.


University of New Orleans Women's Center was created in 1985 to serve diverse needs of women who comprise the university, and to affirm lives of women at UNO and in New Orleans. The center serves as a referral base and support source for campus & community women; offers a range of programming (including workshops on study skills and career strategies, educational speakers, and discussion groups); and houses an 900-book library with a broad base of periodicals and miscellaneous brochures and print materials, including an on-line catalog. Their Newsletter Archives is searchable. Be sure to try their Random Women's Quote generator (when it works, it's cool!). Their calendar of events is out of date.


University of Notre Dame Women's Resource Center maintains a library, coordinates efforts of various groups oriented to women's issues, sponsors events on campus that relate to women, promotes research on gender issues, and provides space for women and concerned others to find support and understanding.


University of Oregon's ASUO Women's Center promotes personal and societal change via a multicultural program. Staff refer to offices/agencies for counseling, legal assistance, child care, and crisis intervention. Annual events include Women's Health Symposium, Women of Color Conference, Women's History Month, Take Back the Nigh,t and Women's Safety Week. They also operate a lending library. Seven student coordinators earn monthly stipends and students may earn credit by serving as peer advisors and discussion group leaders.


University of Pennslyvania Women's Center site is a simple page outlining their mission: to make the University of Pennsylvania responsive to women's concerns in any and at all levels.The Center, unlike most University offices, provides services for a broad base of constituents including students, faculty, staff and community women. The Center has an explicit advocacy function as it relates to issues affectingwomen, racial minorities. For now, the site offers only a history of the Center and nothing else besides their mission.


University of Richmond Women's Resource Center provides a variety of services to women and men through educational opportunities and leadership development. The Center offers career and job search counseling, a resource library, and a newsletter.

University of Rochester Susan B. Anthony University Center supports the University's commitment to the equality of women and men. It exists as a hub of education, resources and services- for the entire University, as well as for residents of the Greater Rochester metro area. this site is under construction and does not yet have much more information on the Center available.

University of Tennessee, Knoxville Women's Center Their library contains research materials perfect for projects or term papers, newsletters from various organizations, several women's journals, and over1000 books which may be checked out. They have an extensive list of referrals on women's issues. The Center serves the University and community by providing programs on topics of interest to women (e.g., series of small discussion groups, panel discussions, local and national speakers, and open forums in which students can voice their opinions and concerns.

University of Utah Women' Resource Center provides educational support services for women at the University. It supports and facilitates women's choices, changes, and empowerment through programs, advocacy, workshops, group and individual counseling. These programs and services reflect the full complexity of women's identities. Special Programs include Peers Educating To End Rape (a student facilitated, educational program) and counseling/ support groups for sexual assault survivors and divorced women.

University of Virginia Women's Center sponsors a wide range lecture series, seminars, and workshops focusing on women's issues both practical and academic; provides free counseling services for both women and men; andthe Sexual Assault Education Office. They also publish their own literary magazine and a newsletter plus they offer a library. This is a well-designed site.

University of Washington Women's Center is indirectly described on this site. It notes many of their activities in individual links. The Center offers an annual Women's Wellness Conference; a re-entry program for adult women (which offers support/referrals, registration information, and assistance in locating financial aid), and a variety of fee-based classes (e.g., Academic Success, Computers/Internet, Fitness & Movement, Women's Health, Personal Safety, Home & Auto Maintenance, Career & Financial Planning, Careers in the Arts, Writers & Writing, Travel). The Center annually awards a Nursing student a $250 scholarship.

University of Wyoming Women's Center provides referral services, support, a research and resource library, individual counseling and support groups for women, awareness programs, child care referral services, and special event programs.


Utah State University Women's Center for Lifelong Learning provides information, assistance, and referral concerning the opportunities and resources and serves as an advocate for women educating campus and community constituencies on the changing status of women and gender-based issues. The Center facilitates the exchange of information for personal and professional development for women students, faculty and stage. This office provides financial and academic assistance, personal development programs, and special activities.



Virginia Tech Women's Center addresses issues of recruitment, retention, and sexual assault and harassment education. The goals of the Center focus on institutional change and assistance to individuals and groups. The Center offers crisis support for sexual assault and harassment, advocacy during campus and criminal judicial procedures, and works to enhance communication among women in the larger university community.


Western Illinois University Women's Center works to increase awareness of the special needs and concerns of WIU women by providing resources and referrals in such areas as health, finance, and employment. They provide a library, coordinate an annual "Take Back the Night and March Against Violence," sponsor a "Women as Researchers" Brownbag series, organize an annual leadership conference, coordinate Women's History Month observances, host meetings of various women's groups, and offer workshops, seminars and support groups.



Western Washington University Women's Center is a student-run organization committed to serving as a resource center for women's issues, sponsoring programs, and raising feminist consciousness. We also have a large circulating library. Programs include the Body Image Action Network and a Take Back the Night rally and march.


Wright State University Women's Center is a central contact for resources and support for women on campus and in the surrounding area. The Center seeks to foster connections, provide resources, and advocating for equitable situations for women are the Women's Center's main activities. The site has one short news area and a few links.


We're sure there are others. If you can identify a center/office on the web that we should add to this list, please let us know (rebeccag@uic.edu). We are trying to get a more complete listing of service offices for women at American colleges and universities (we'll leave it to others to assemble annotated lists of women's studies programs, research centers on women and gender, and lists of offices in other countries).
