As part of the University's ongoing organizational commitment to serving the health needs of our community, I'm pleased to announce our participation in the NFL Community Huddle Program, an initiative addressing mental health disorders. The UIC Department of Psychiatry and the Medical Center have partnered with the Satcher Health Leadership Institute and Morehouse School of Medicine to help bring nationwide attention to the growing epidemic of dementia; specifically the challenges faced by athletes and their families. Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher and former NFL players will speak about mental health and mental well being during this town hall meeting.
Dr. Anand Kumar, Lizzie Gilman Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry along with other UIC faculty will offer their expertise during the question and answer session to provide valuable information on the resources and treatment programs at UIC and the University of Illinois Medical Center.
I encourage you to spread the word to any community partners about this free event. Attending the meeting will not only show support for the Department of Psychiatry and the Medical Center, but will also demonstrate our commitment to being actively involved in the community. With your support we are helping to create a "game plan" to increase awareness and overcome obstacles facing mental disorders.
The event is Wednesday, August 10th from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Sheraton in Chicago. Additional information is below.
