Philosophy
in the Chicago Area
The Chicago area is an active and lively philosophical scene. In addition to our own department colloquium series, which features both visiting and local speakers, there are talks at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and Loyola University. The Central Division of the American Philosophical Association frequently meets in Chicago. So in the Chicago area there is no shortage of papers and talks given by prominent philosophers. For more information, see Colloquia, Events, and Special Programs. Under the CIC Traveling Scholars program, full-time graduate students at the University of Illinois at Chicago can take graduate philosophy courses at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago without paying additional tuition. (UIC philosophy graduate students may take up to four such courses, after their first year in the program.) The UIC Philosophy Department jointly sponsors with the University of Chicago and Northwestern a Consortium for Graduate Study in Ancient Philosophy in the Chicago area. The faculty of the program includes Constance Meinwald (UIC), Richard Kraut, Sara Monoson (Northwestern), and Danielle Allen, Elizabeth Asmis, Gabriel Richardson Lear, Jonathan Lear, Glen Most, Ian Mueller, Martha Nussbaum, and John Wynne (University of Chicago). The Seminary Co-op Bookstore, located near the University of Chicago, offers as wide a selection of philosphy books as can be found anywhere in the world.
