Chief of Police

John Richardson is the Chief of Police at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In this capacity he is head of law enforcement and security for a diverse, urban university community of 37,000 faculty, staff and students. Prior to joining UIC, Chief Richardson served 33 years with the Chicago Police Department.

Over his career Chief Richardson has served with distinction in both operational and administrative capacities, rising from Beat Officer to Deputy Superintendent. During his tenure with the Chicago Police Department, his assignments have included organizing the Police Department's presence for Presidential visits, WTO protests, the National Jewish Convention and World Cup Soccer. He has also served as liaison to numerous law enforcement and community agencies. As Chief of Patrol, Chief Richardson has overseen the Chicago Police Department's security strategy for public housing, public transportation and security operations at both O'Hare and Midway Airports. In addition, he devised Chicago's security and emergency preparedness strategies in the wake of September 11. His model became the template for six major police departments in the United States. Chief Richardson has also served as Chairperson of the Chicago Police Department's Awards Committee and was a member of the Merit Board. Throughout his career Chief Richardson has upheld the highest standards of police conduct and crime-prevention.

Chief Richardson is a member of the Chicago Captains Association; the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police; the International Association of Chiefs of Police; the United Negro College Fund (Fund Raiser); the NAACP; the Illinois State Police Association; the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (Midwest Regional Vice President); and a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

He is a graduate of Northeastern Illinois University and holds a Master of Science in Criminology from Chicago State University. A Lifelong resident of Chicago, the Chief now lives in Hawthorne Woods, a suburb of Chicago where he lives with his wife of 36 years, Brenda. He has a son and a daughter Damone and Robyn
