PDP POLICIES

In order to increase the efficiency and equity of the PDP, we are implementing a new, more formal policy this semester. If you would like PDP student assistance on a research project, you must now fill out a request form (attached to this newsletter; copies are also available outside the PDP office and on the website). The PDP faculty supervisors will coordinate these requests and ensure both that jobs are completed in a timely fashion and that PDP students are fulfilling their duties and expectations. Given that the PDP involves the classic principal-agent problem, we would like to discourage the situation of multiple principals, which as we all know, increases transaction costs and leads to efficacy losses, shirking and a whole host of undesirable outcomes.

What PDP Does and Does Not Do

·     Assist fellow graduate students and faculty conduct statistical and other data-related analyses (for example, generating GIS data maps). PDP students are available to assist with limited data-entry tasks and can help locate sources for electronic data, as well as convert such data across platforms.

·     Sponsor departmental computing workshops.

·     Participate in the new Research Design and Methods Workshop.

·     Supervise and maintain the computing lab (BSB 1129).

·     Oversee data archiving.

·     PDP students DO NOT provide photocopy services.

·     PDP students DO NOT function as personal research assistants. Faculty/Students with larger projects requiring more intensive research assistance should seek alternative support.

·     PDP students DO NOT assist with computer-related hardware and software issues. They have been heavily utilized in this capacity in the past; however there are other graduate student assistants who have been explicitly hired for this purpose. Information on the OSSR computer support person and his/her office hours and contact information will be dissemination soon. If you cannot reach this individual, please contact the computing staff at ACCC:

COMPUTER LAB POLICIES

The lab has a door-stop with “PC LAB” marked on it; use it rather than a chair.

Dispose whatever you bring into the lab (including food items, waste paper, etc.).

Do not lock the machines. Check print settings before printing (use Print Preview). Avoid wasting paper. When possible, use duplex printing (i.e., print on both sides of a single sheet of paper). If the printer(s) is out of paper, get some reams from the main supply room and refill the paper trays. Shut the door to the lab if you are the last individual vacating the lab (even if only for a few minutes).
