PRINTING

Offset and Digital Printing

The Office of Publications Services offers two types of printing, offset and digital. Offset printing is a lengthy process involving transfer of text and graphic images from computer files to film to metal plates, and finally to paper on Heidelberg offset presses. Soy-based inks of various colors are used in offset printing, which makes it the only choice for printing orders that involve two or more colors. The Life of a Printing Order provides a step-by-step introduction to offset printing at Publications Services.

Digital printing is a newer process that eliminates several offset steps. It involves direct electronic transfer of text and graphic images from computer files or scanned copy to a high-tech digital printer, which at Publications Services is a Xerox DocuTech 135 Production Publisher. DocuTech provides a low-cost alternative to offset printing for small orders that involve only one color. Its 600-dot-per-inch output of text, photos, and graphics is comparable to offset, and its 132-page-per-minute printing capability makes it the ideal choice for orders requiring fast turnaround. For information regarding the full range of digital printing options, contact one of our customer service representatives, or call DocuTech at (312) 996-6868.

DocuTech

DocuTech provides a low-cost alternative to offset printing for small orders that involve only one color. Its 600 dot-per-inch output of text, photos, and graphics is comparable to offset, and its 132 page-per-minute printing capability makes it the ideal choice for orders requiring fast turnaround. From flyers to posters, newsletters to course packets, and saddle-stitched pamphlets to bound books, DocuTech's team of document specialists is prepared to accommodate your digital printing needs.

Scanning Capabilities

All printing orders submitted as hard copy are first scanned. Once scanned, text, photos, and graphics files can be merged into one document for printing. Text can be cut and pasted and reduced or enlarged, and photos can be cropped, lightened, or darkened. Even old photographs, color or black-and-white, can be adjusted to eliminate stains and irregularities.

Paper Stocks, Sizes, and Colors

The Office of Publications Services carries a complete range of paper stocks exclusively for DocuTech printing. From standard 20-pound paper to 110-pound index, from 8.5 x 11 to 11 x 17 inch, paper options in DocuTech printing are virtually limitless. Special order stock requests can also be accommodated.

Finishing Options

DocuTech printing orders can be trimmed, folded, and/or bound just as any other order submitted to the Office of Publications Services. The DocuTech bookletmaker capabilities include tape binding and saddle stitching, and options such as spiral binding are also available.

Course Packets

Another service offered by our DocuTech's team of document specialists is preparing and printing course packets. We provide copyright clearance, print, collate, and bind your course packets, then ship them directly to the UIC Bookstore. Please note that copyright clearance can take up to 10 weeks, and costs are based on fees charged by the Copyright Clearance Center.
