1. Be sure to attend this year's conference at UIC and be ready to submit a proposal. The following year's host is chosen during at the current host site every year. The voting for the next year's conference part of the workshop series is always included as part of the conference.
Be ready with specific proposals -- how you can make it fly (e.g., space, resource, funding, ideas), and why you could do a better job than anyone else. Hand-outs help, as does support from your school's administration. In Indiana State's case, they came in 1996 (at Beloit, Wisc.) with the support of the Terre Haute Business and Convention Center's endorsement. It is useful if you have verified that the space you intend to use is available in February 1999. If you like, take a look at UIC's proposal for this year's conference to get some ideas. This is only a sample, however. Your proposal can take any form as long it gives a clear description of your vision for the conference and how you will carry it out.
2. If you want to vote for a particular school, you should also attend the Next Conference Site Selection Meeting at the Chicago conference (Session 5, Lecture Center D5). The way it works:
Each school that shows at this meeting gets one vote for their campus-- be it one representative or a group from that school. Obviously, the more the merrier if you plan to issue a proposal in order to answer questions and provide information/enthusiasm for your proposal.
Lawrence University has generously volunteered to serve as the archives for the Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender College Conference. This meeting will include a brief presentation by Joseph Tennis from Lawrence about the archives project.
At any rate, be at this meeting if you can (or at least make sure your college has a representative at this meeting). These conferences can breath new life into activist efforts on your campus.
