Helderman xen1@siu.edu, Or glbf5151@siu.edu Msg: 618-453-5151, fax: 618-453-8164 PRESS RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, FEB. 9, 1996 GLBF is celebrating its' 25th anniversary as a registered student organization on April 14th 1996. In honor of its' silver anniversary which coincidentally is the same year as the 25th anniversary of Stonewall, the Gays, Lesbians Bisexuals, and friends of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale will be having a "Gay-la Celebration." Come celebrate and renew the excitement that was a part of that most important point in gay history! Originally named the Gay Liberation Organization, the group gained recognized student organization status through the standard university procedures in the Spring of 1971. The group changed its' name to the Gay Peoples' Union in 1975, the Gay & Lesbian Peoples' Union in 1980, and finally the Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, and Friends (GLBF). Although the group has undergone a long evolutionary process, we are striving to reflect inclusiveness and the diversity of the Southern Illinois University Community. Our group has continued to be an active presence on the campus of SIU-C and in rural southern Illinois, providing support, education, and social outlets to scores of students and community members over the past 25 years. The GLBF will be celebrating during the month of April, and a special "Gay-la" weekend is scheduled for alumni and friends April 12-14th. Included in the weekend will be an art show reception of alumni work at the Associated Artists Gallery in Carbondale, a formal dinner-dance, a major show in Shryock Auditorium, tour train rides, a picnic, a champaign brunch & more. In an attempt to contact as many former members as possible, we are asking various gay/les/bi newspapers, magazines, and newsletters, news groups, and web publications to assist us in our search. We would appreciate your help through the publication of this document and information below. In exchange we will recognize you in our Silver Anniversary Commemorative Program, and provide you with additional information should you decide to cover this event as a news item. If you have posted our note, & would like to be mentioned in our program, please E-mail your organization's name to xen1@siu.edu.
