Recommendations and Requirements by college

This year we have worked with many departments across campus to put together this list computer and software recommendations and requirements.

If your department is not listed below, you should contact them to see if there is a recommendation, if not, you may ask us and we can help you assess your needs for the perfect computer.

College of Art & Design

The school of Art & Design requires the following items. Please make sure to see if your individual major below requires or recommends additional hardware and software.

For your Final Cut software, you have a choice of which software to purchase.  Everyone is required to have Final Cut Express but if you are 100% certain that you will be a Moving Images major next year you may purchase Final Cut Studio. If you are not sure which to choose, please ask us or your department and we will help you make the best decision.

Everyone is required to have an external hard drive.  It must be Firewire 800 and 7200rpm speed. It's your decision on the size, but the more space the better.  Below are the two options we have available in store.

School of Architecture

ARCH 105 students - Your department requires that you purchase additional supplies for your class.  These will be available in 2 simple kits that will save you approximately 50% starting August 17th.  Full details are available at the UIC Bookstore website.

College of Medicine

Software that is required

College of Engineering

The College of Engineering does not have a computer requirement. All students will have access to computer labs with the special software needed to complete homework.

For student's who do choose to purchase a computer, The UIC Bookstore has put together a list of recommended computers and software based on the input of different departments in the College of Engineering. These computers are meant to last you a minimum of 3 years and possibly well into graduation.
