  • TIP: All commands are on menu at bottom of compose a message screen.
  • At the attachment line type "Ctrl J" (To Attach)

You will see a list of the files in your home directory. Among them should be your document (in this case document.txt) which you have just transferred over.

TIP: An attachment comment is not necessary unless you have been so instructed, or you care to make a note. ENTER again.

StudentsTO READ ATTACHMENTS IN E-MAIL

You can FTP all manner of documents, with .doc, .shtml, .wpd extensions, but you can only read .txt files within your ICARUS e-mail. All the useful commands are listed at the bottom of your ICARUS screen.
  • If you see an attachment/part in the e-mail, select V(iew attach)
  • If the file is a .txt file (ASCII) simply press V again for View.
  • If the file is any other type of file, you should Save it into the home directory of your account and then FTP it over to your disk or c:\download which the default directory for FTP at SCAILAB.

HOW TO FTP FILES

WHY DO I HAVE TO FTP AT ALL?

To move files to the network-so that they can be sent as attachments in e-mail or posted to the web-you must use an application called File Transfer Protocol (FTP). It is the same protocol used when downloading files from the Web. It is a painless operation, though it might look complicated at first.

TO GET THERE:

Click icon on the Internet folder.

Then log in as you would into you icarus account, using your userid and password. Be sure that the PROFILE NAME in the log-in window says ICARUS and NOT TIGGER

WHAT YOU WILL SEE:

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW TO FTP A FILE:
  • In the right hand column (LOCAL SYSTEM), highlight the directory where your file is located. You might have to scroll down to the bottom of the window if it is on your a:drive. Click away until you have found the path and can highlight the files you wish to transfer. (In my case it would be document.txt in the lower half of the left hand column.
  • Make sure AUTO/BINARY is clicked on.
  • Click on the arrow ®
  • Your transferred file document.txt should appear in the list of files in the right hand column. Now you can exit FTP and log into your own icarus account as you ordinarily do.
