Newsgroups and ListServs

What are Listservs and Newsgroups?

Both listservs and newsgroups are Internet discussion groups. A listserv is a discussion named after the original automated computer program, Listserv, which manages the flow of messages.

A newsgroup is a Usenet Discussion Group. Listservs are traditionally considered more academic than newsgroups which discuss topics that include a more popular range of subjects: some academic, some banal, some bizarre. However, during recent years at UIC that focus has been shifting.

How Do I Set Up a Listserv or Newsgroup?

UIC newsgroups and listservs are set up on-line through the ACCC Computer Center, and not SCAILAB. Go to: http://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/

Newsgroup setup requires few answers: all you need to know is how you wish to name your newsgroup.

Listservs are trickier. There are more questions to answer, because as the owner—or if you choose, moderator of the listserv--you are in charge of keeping track of the subscribers.

TIP: More control means more work for YOU. If you chose to moderate your listserv, you will have to sift through submitted posts before re-posting them to the list.

Your class listserv or newsgroup should be ready in a couple of days although they do request a full week's notice. ACCC will e-mail you back a confirmation.

Address all queries to ACCC : consult@uic.edu

What Other Listserv Commands Do I Need to Know?

Tip: Newsgroups: You have no responsibility to maintain the newsgroup; those functions are assumed by ACCC.

With Listservs, however, you may be required to perform certain maintenance duties.

To get a list of the general listserv commands post the following message to listserv@listserv.uic.edu:

LISTSERV REFCARD: for general user commands

LISTOWNR REFCARD: for list and file management commands

REV listname: to get a list of all the list members

DEL listname email@address: to delete a member without notifying her/him
