Study Abroad in Barcelona, Spain

Develop Spanish language fluency and an understanding of European culture and society while you:
• Maintain residency as a University of Illinois Student
• Experience a year abroad with U of I classmates
• Receive credit from U of I for study abroad
• Continue receiving U of I financial aid while abroad.

The Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese invites you to participate in the Spain study Abroad Program. You will spend a year in Barcelona, Spain’s second most prominent city, situated on the shores of the Mediterranean. The Spain Study Abroad Program, founded in 1971, is sponsored by the department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese and directed in Barcelona by the University of Illinois faculty.

Stimulating Curriculum
The first month in Barcelona is spent in as Intensive Language Program (ILP) that includes grammar review, conversation, contemporary history and culture of Spain, and an introduction to Catalan. The ILP carries 4 hours of credit.
Students then begin the core curriculum, arranged by the program and taught by the faculty from the University of Barcelona, Courses meet 3 hour per week for 15 weeks.
• Language. Advanced Composition, Advanced Spanish Grammar, Catalan
• Linguistics. Language and Society in Context.
• Literature. Don Quijote, Spanish Literature to 1700, 18th and 19th Century Latin American Literature, Spanish Literature (1898-1936), Post Civil War Spanish Literature
• Culture. Contemporary Spain. History of Spanish Art, the Spanish Civil War, Culture and Literature

In consultation with the program director, students may also enroll in any course offered by the University of Barcelona. The program offers tutors for a number of subjects such as anthropology, art history, cinema studies, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, sociology and Spanish literature.

Vibrant Location
Barcelona is a bustling, cosmopolitan city of 3 million people with a diverse linguistic and ethnic heritage, a rich and varied culture, and an ancient history. More recent history includes hosting the 1992 Summer Olympics.
All residents of Barcelona speak Castilian Spanish and, in addition, over also speak Catalan. The bilingual, bicultural charm of the city makes it s distinctive place to study. It is ideally situated for travel to the South of Spain and North Africa, as well as all major European countries.
Participants study from August to mid June at the Universidad Central, an elegant downtown campus of the University of Barcelona at the center of the city’s cultural and civic life. A modern branch of the University, with numerous faculties and extensive sport facilities, is connected to the downtown location by a 20-minute ride on the metro.

Field Trips
The program arranges group tours to important cities in Catalunya and to such events as the Fallas (fireworks) in Valencia, the Dali Museum in Figueras and San Pere de Roda, a 10th century abbey on the Mediterranean coast.

Sports
The University or Barcelona has extensive ports facilities available for use without fee by Illinois students. And there is always hiking (with the “Alpinistas”), biking, walking and skiing in the Pyrenees and swimming in the Mediterranean.

Home-Away-From-Home
Enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving dinner with all the program participants (and all the traditional turkey trimmings).

Personal Travel
The instruction schedule allows for considerable personal travel – two to three weeks in December, one week in February and two weeks at Easter,

Eligibility
The program is open to University of Illinois or California undergraduate students with junior standing in any major, but others may be admitted. The minimum language requirements is two years of college-level Spanish (or equivalent), but preference is given to students who have additional coursework. Applicants must have a “B” minimum grade point average. In addition, applicants must be in good health and have the kind of flexibility and sensitivity to others that will allow for successful adjustment to an unfamiliar cultural setting.

On-Site Administration
This program is supervised on-site by a resident director who is a faculty member from either the University of Illinois or the University of California and who oversees the academic content of the courses, organizes the various program activities, provides liaison to Spanish institutions, and in general assists students during their sojourn abroad.

Internship Opportunities
A unique opportunity is available to 25 to 30 students each year who qualify while they are in Barcelona for internship in a broad range of fields, including law, business and film.

Housing
For the first five weeks of the program, students are housed in a private college. During the academic year, they may choose to live with families, señoras (single women), or in apartments with Spanish students or professionals. The program has its own “Housing List” that students are given upon arrival in Barcelona.

Health Insurance
Students are enrolled in an HMO which covers all their medical and dental needs other than prescriptions for the duration of the academic year.
