Graduate Studies in French Literatures

Welcome to the departmental site for Graduate Studies in French. The department is home to a number of accomplished scholars. The department also boasts several rising young academics who are contributing in important ways to the life of the department and to the intellectual pursuits of their respective fields.

Situated in the world-class city of Chicago, the department is close to numerous universities and colleges, thus allowing for easy intercollegial exchange. Renowned cultural institutions such as the Newberry Library, the Art Institute, and the Field Museum are all within minutes of campus and offer programs and courses that draw many of our students.
Students in our program work closely with their professors throughout their studies; classes are small and encourage debate. In addition, UIC has a vibrant graduate student community, and M.A. students in French may do interdisciplinary work with other programs. UIC's Institute for the Humanities sponsors a great variety of lectures and symposia, including an annual graduate student conference that gives students from many disciplines the opportunity to present their work and interact with prominent keynote speakers.
