M.A. Comprehensive Examinations: The Comprehensive Examination in
Hispanic Descriptive Linguistics consists of the following:
- one exam area in Syntax
- one exam area in Phonology-Morphology
- one area in literature
- two areas chosen from Sociolinguistics, Dialectology, or History
of the Language (e.g., one area in Dialectology and one area in History
of the Language but NOT two exams in Dialectology or any one area)
Each of the five exam areas consists of three questions.
M.A. in Hispanic Applied Linguistics
Required total hours: 36, beyond an appoved Bachelor's Degree
Required courses: SPAN

- four areas chosen from Syntax, Phonology-Morphology, Sociolinguistics,
Dialectology, History of the Language, Second Language Acquisition; the
student may repeat any area only once
Each of the five exam areas consists of three questions.
Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics
Required hours: 60, beyond an approved M.A. degree. For the
Ph.D. in Language in Context, of those 60 hours, a minimum of 32 must be
in approved coursework that should include SPAN
403 and
405 . Remaining hours are taken as dissertation research credits. For
the concentration in Second Language Acquisition, the requirements are different.

All Ph.D. students are required to complete a set of Preliminary Examinations
before proceeding to the dissertation research. For information on these
examinations, consult a departmental advisor.
Language requirements. Students of Hispanic Linguistics are required
to have advanced proficiency in a Romance language other than Spanish in
addition to reading knowledge of another language, either ancient or modern.
These requirements must be met before taking the prelim examinations. Please
