Graduate Studies in Hispanic Literatures

M.A./ PhD. in Hispanic Literatures

The Ph.D. Program in Spanish Literature is less than a decade old, but our placement record for recent Ph.D.’s is impressive, as is our ability to attract promising scholars and internationally recognized faculty. Through collaboration with other departments (especially English and History) and with programs in Latin American and Latino Studies, African and Afro-American Studies, Women's Studies, and the Great Cities Program, our Department offers graduate students unusual facilities for studying particular areas across disciplines and geographic locations. Some of our students are currently working on Modernisms across the Americas, Trans-American Postcolonial Studies, Latin American and Latino Literatures and Popular Study, Transatlantic Literature and Film, and Colonial Studies in French and Spanish. Numerous opportunities exist for interdisciplinary study and research. Individual interests and disciplinary combinations thus find ample room for development in a rich and diversified institutional setting.

The UIC division of Hispanic Literatures has a nationally and internationally recognized faculty of scholars in many fields and critical approaches. The academic and professional environment UIC provides includes a substantial library collections, an impressive Humanities Center for graduates and faculty, and the impressive resources of the Cervantes Institute, the Newberry Library for Colonial and Early Modern Studies, the University of Chicago and Northwestern University Libraries, and the Chicago Latin American and Latino Institute (for the study of film and popular culture in particular), the important Chicago Latin American Film Festival every Spring, and a number of other events related to Spain and Latin America sponsored by the city. During the academic year, the department sponsors a lecture series built around the work or young scholars whose work is being recognized in their respective fields.

The Graduate Program in Hispanic Literature and Linguistics combined has about forty resident graduates at the M.A. and Ph.D. level. The academic and professional needs of individual students are met through regular advising and close work with members of the faculty.
