The Heritage Language Teacher Corps

The Heritage Language Teacher Corps has the goal of educating high school Spanish teachers in Chicago to work with heritage Spanish speakers.  These students often have well-developed oral Spanish skills (making introductory Spanish courses not very useful to them) but their formal education has been almost entirely in English, so they need to focus on aquiring reading and writing skills in Spanish.  Spanish teachers typically learn about pedagogy for foreign language learners and do not receive training in  theories and best practices for teaching Spanish to heritage speakers.  We offer three courses to fill this need and provide a resource web.

This group is formed by the Chicago Public Schools' Office of Language, Cultural and Early Childhood Education, and by UIC's Department of Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese, as well as UIC's Office of Continuing Education.  We are funded by the U.S. Department of Education, specifically the Office of Bilingual Education and Minority Language Affairs.
