My field is literary technique in the modern and contemporary Spanish novel. Primarily I consider myself a galdosista, an enthusiasm that dates back to my doctoral dissertation. As an American Association of University Women Fellow I had a chance to spend a year in Spain and to consult papers in the home of Galdós’s daughter María, as well as interviewing Gregorio Marañón and Pérez de Ayala concerning their recollections of don Benito. Today, however, I am also apt to be reading and investigating any contemporary novelist writing in Spanish who is doing interesting work. Thus I have published on Unamuno, Juan Goytisolo and, straying a bit from Peninsular literature, on Ariel Dorfman’s La última cancion de Manuel Sendero (Chile).
