The concentration in Sociolinguistics takes place within the PhD in Hispanic Linguistics. Within this concentration, students may pursue any one of three tracks:

Bilingualism and Heritage Language Development
Dialects and Variation
Discourse Analysis

Each track involves the same basic requirements that apply to students generally at the PhD level. In addition, all tracks share three additional requirements. We call these “Core classes for all three tracks in Sociolinguistics.” In turn, each track has a few track specific requirements. Beyond these, students will be advised to take classes outside the department in order to round out their backgrounds and complete their formal education. These additional classes should address topics related to Linguistics, Communication, Research Methodology, and Social Theory or Practice. They also must be approved by the student’s major advisor.

General Program Requirements:

Beyond the Masters Level, there are two requirements:
• Span 403: Advanced Spanish Syntax
and
• Span 405: Advanced Spanish Phonology and Morphology.

Core Classes for all three tracks in Sociolinguistics:

• Span 406: Spanish Sociolinguistics
• Ling 551: Research Practicum in Sociolinguistics.
• Ed 503: Essentials of Quantitative Inquiry in Education (Focus is statistics.)

Beyond general program requirements and the core classes, each track has two additional requirements:

Track 1:Bilingualism and Heritage Language Development
• Span 507: Seminar in Second Language Acquisition and Bilingualism
• Span/LALS 427: Language policy and cultural identity

Students pursuing the track in Bilingualism and Heritage Language Development are usually offered the opportunity to teach in UIC's Spanish for Heritage Speakers program.

Students in any SFIP doctoral program, linguistics or literature, may pursue a minor in Bilingualism and Heritage Language Development. See the Graduate Handbook for guidelines on completing a minor.

• Span 505: Seminar in Spanish Descriptive Linguistics: Pragmatics

Students within each track may further select from a list of additional classes either from within the Department or from other departments that address issues in Linguistics, Communication, Research Methodology, and Social Theory or Practice. Classes relevant to these topics are found in the UIC Departments or Programs of Anthropology, Communication, Criminal Justice, Education, English, Gender and Women’s Studies, Philosophy, Psychology, and Sociology.
