WHY MAJOR IN SLAVIC AND BALTIC STUDIES AT UIC?
In May 2004 ten new European countries enter the European
Union. Our Department is unique in the United States in
offering tuition in four of the languages and cultures represented
in this new list: Czech, Lithuanian, Polish, and Slovak.
With a total population of 500 million people, the expanded
EU will comprise a bigger market than the US, Canada, and
Japan combined. This means that there will be many job opportunities
for graduates as translators (in the European Parliament),
in commerce, diplomacy, and government agencies. A degree
including a second Slavic language (Russian, Serbian, and
Ukrainian) or a combined degree with a western European
language (Spanish, French, German) or with business studies,
economics and law would make a UIC major and minor in Slavic
and Baltic Languages and Literatures a rare and attractive
commodity in today's global market place.
Purple color is Czech Republic,
