About Eleanor Daley Eleanor Daley valued education over all else as a path to success. Recognizing and honoring her beliefs, the University of Illinois at Chicago is proud to announce the UIC Eleanor Daley Scholarship. In her name, these scholarships will help carve many paths toward deserving students’ brilliant futures. Mrs. Daley and her husband, Chicago’s longest-tenured 20th century mayor Richard J. Daley, strongly believed a home environment respecting and encouraging academic achievement would drive their seven children toward great accomplishments. This belief in access to education as a foundation for future success guided Richard J. Daley’s vision to establish a campus for the University of Illinois at Chicago - the accomplishment he called his greatest contribution to Chicago. Mrs. Daley was born Eleanor Guilfoyle in 1907 to first generation Irish-American parents. During her lifetime, in addition to raising accomplished children, including Chicago’s current mayor Richard M. Daley, she built a legacy as a strong and caring woman who cherished Chicago. Over the years, Mayor Richard J. Daley’s legacy at UIC has continued. Mrs. Daley participated in the naming of the campus Library in memory of her husband, and in 2002 celebrated the centennial of his birth by leading her family in donating his papers to the Richard J. and Eleanor Daley Archives at UIC. The UIC Eleanor Daley Scholarship honors the legacy of this remarkable woman by enabling future generations of Chicago’s youth to achieve a college education, the gateway to opportunity.
