MA Degree Requirements
General Sociology
Coursework
- At least 32 hours1
beyond the bachelor's degree, including:
- Sociology 500 and 501
- Research Methods I and II
- Sociology 401 and 402
- Sociological and Intermediate Sociological Statistics
- One course in social psychology
or population (e.g., Soc. 410, 451, 471, or 473)
- One course in social organization
(e.g., Soc. 441 or 447)
- One course in sociological
theory (e.g., Soc. 485, 487, or 488)
- Sociology 597 - Master's
Project Research
- 8 semester hours in seminars
at the 500 level, excluding Soc. 593 and 5952
- Sociology 593 - Colloquium
on College Teaching of Soociology (required only for teaching assistants)
Master's Paper
A significant sociological
project, based upon original research, and approved by two faculty members,
including your faculty advisor.
Applied Sociology
The requirements for the
applied sociology MA include the requirements for the general sociology MA,
as well as an internship (Sociology 596 for 6 hours of credit).
Notes:
1You
may petition the Graduate Studies Committee to apply up to 8 hours of comparable
coursework taken prior to admission toward the course requirements in sociological
theory, social organization, and social psychology or population.
2You
may also petition the Graduate Studies Committee to apply one seminar outside
the department to the seminar requirement. This may be a 3-hour seminar.
