Gilman
International
Scholarship
Available only to Pell Grant recipients, the Gilman Scholarship aims to diversify and expand participation in international study by awarding grants of up to $8,000 to undergraduates who have been traditionally underrepresented in education abroad. Deadline for Spring 2010 is October 6, 2009. For a list of recent UIC awardees, click here.
Alliance Scholarship
The Alliance for Global Education will award scholarships of up to $6,000 per student for their programs in China and India. These will be need-based, with preference given to minorities and students from non-traditional majors. Deadline for Spring 2010 is November 15, 2009.
Center for Global Education Scholarships (CGE)
Scholarships for Students from Historically Underrepresented Groups
The Center offers scholarships for students who belong to historically underrepresented groups. Selection is based partly on the applicants' ability to articulate their reasons for enrolling in a CGE program and how they will share the experience upon return to the U.S. and partly on financial need. Awards range from $500 to $3000. Deadline for Spring 2010 is November 1, 2009.
Heritage Scholarships
These scholarships are for applicants of the Center for Global Education programs in Namibia (Southern Africa) or Mexico. Eligible students will be either 1) of Pan African descent who are committed to understanding the effect of racism/apartheid and resistance movements in the U.S. and in Southern Africa, or 2) students of Hispanic/Latino descent who have demonstrated participation in Latino or indigenous organizations in their community. Awards cover tuition, room, and board charges not funded by the Pell grant. Deadline for Sping 2010 is November 1, 2009
NSEP (Boren) Scholarship
The National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Scholarship for study of world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American & the Caribbean, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren Scholarships are merit based. The maximum award is $8,000 for a summer, $10,000 for a semester, or $20,000 for a full academic year. The annual application deadline is in February.
Bridging Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to American undergraduate students participating in study abroad programs in Japan for a semester or an academic year. Awards range from $2,500 to $4,000. Deadline for Spring 2010 is October 6, 2009.
IES Abroad Diversity Scholarships
“IES Abroad is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse student body. Our Diversity Scholarships are one way to encourage and support students from a range of institutions and under-represented populations. Under-represented students include students from under-represented racial and ethnic groups, first generation to college students, students from low income families and students with a history of overcoming adversity.” Awards up to $5,000. Deadlines May 1 for Fall programs and October 26 for Spring programs.
IES Merit based scholarships
As public university students, UIC participants in all semester-long IES programs automatically receive a $1,500 credit toward their IES program cost. Additionally, UIC students may apply for numerous merit-based scholarships ranging from $500-$5,000.
CIEE Scholarships
As a member of the CIEE Academic Consortium, UIC students who participate in a CIEE program are eligible to apply for a number of scholarships based on diversity, merit, and/or need. Awards range from $1,000-$8,000.
School for Field Studies Scholarships
SFS offers a range of scholarship opportunities, including awards of up to $6,000 to students from public institutions like UIC who study abroad on an SFS program for a semester.
DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship
DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service, invites "highly qualified undergraduate students to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities. Preference will be given to students whose projects or programs are based at and organized by a German university. Scholarships are available either as part of an organized study abroad program or as part of an individual, student-designed study abroad semester or year. Scholarships may be granted for a minimum of four (one semester) and a maximum of 10 months (one academic year). Recipients will be awarded a monthly stipend of approximately 650 euros, plus additional funds to help defray travel and research expenses as well as health insurance. All applications for the academic year 2010/11 must be postmarked by January 31, 2010.
DAAD University Summer Course Grant
This program provides scholarships to attend a broad range of three- to four-week summer courses at German universities which focus mainly on literary, cultural, political and economic aspects of modern and contemporary Germany. Extensive extracurricular programs complement and reinforce the core material. Scholarships are available for courses lasting a minimum of three weeks. The scholarship is approximately 880 euros, which covers tuition, room and board in whole or in part. Accommodations are arranged by the host institution. In addition, DAAD will provide an international travel subsidy of 210 euros. Applications for Summer 2010 must be postmarked November 15, 2009 or earlier.

Nina T. Shepherd (pdf application)
The Nina T. Shepherd Scholarship honors the memory of the founding director of the UIC Study Abroad Office and is made possible by the generosity of her friends and family. The award offers two $1,000 scholarships for students studying abroad for the Spring 2010 semester. Application deadline for Spring 2010 is October 16th.
Kellog Rainbow Merit Scholarship
UIC's Gender and Sexuality Center's Rainbow Merit Scholarships offers three $3,000 awards to students who demonstrate a commitment to advancing the mission of UIC's Gender & Sexuality Center and UIC. Currently enrolled UIC Undergraduate, Graduate, and Professional Students with at least a 3.0 GPA are eligible. These awards are to be used toward tuition/fees and may be applied toward study abroad. Deadline is October 1, 2009.
Honors College Flaherty Scholarship
The scholarship is awarded to Honors College students studying abroad on a UIC-approved study abroad program during the Fall, Spring, or Summer term. The award is made possible by a gift from the estate of Gloria Flaherty, a former professor of German. Several awards ranging from $500 to $1,000. Application deadline is on Friday, October 23rd, 2009.
Judy Curry Award
The Judy Curry scholarship, named after retired Deputy Associate Chancellor and former Professor of Communication at UIC, is awarded annually for Fall or Academic Year program participation to a UIC undergraduate or graduate student for a semester-long overseas academic project or study (preference for project/study related to China / U.S. ). One or more awards of up to $1,000.
Stanley Ikenberry Award
The Stanley Ikenberry Award, named after the former president of the University of Illinois , is awarded annually for Fall or Academic Year for undergraduate students pursuing a UIC Study Abroad Office approved semester-long program. Preference is given to students with financial need. One award of $1,200.
