Accessible Frontiers Portfolio

Accessible Frontiers is a portfolio of scholarships available to UIC students with the objective of helping those traditionally underrepresented in international education push the boundaries of a typical undergraduate experience to include the unfamiliar but exciting world of study abroad. 

Nina Shepherd Scholarship
$250 for summer, $500 for spring
This award honors the memory of the founding director of the UIC Study Abroad Office and is made possible by the generosity of her friends and family

Eligibility

  • Participation on a Study Abroad Office affiliated program
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
Application Deadline: March 22, 2013 for summer and fall programs

UIC-Butler University Scholarship
$1,000 for semester, $500 for summer
This award was established to support UIC students participating in study abroad programs through the Institute for Study Abroad at Butler (IFSA).

Eligibility

  • Participation on an IFSA sponsored program
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
Application Deadline: March 22, 2013 for summer and fall programs

UIC-CIEE Diversity Scholarship
$2,500 for semester, $500 for summer
Through generous support from the Council on International Educational Exchange this fund was established to support traditionally under-represented students studying abroad.

Eligibility

  • Participation on a CIEE program
  • Self-identify as an under-represented student
Application Deadline: March 22, 2013 for summer and fall programs

UIC-SIT Diversity Fund
Up to $2,000 for summer; Up to $4,000 for semester 
Through generous support from World Learning and SIT Study Abroad, the UIC-SIT Fund is established to support of traditionally under-represented students studying abroad.

Eligibility

  • Participation on an affiliated SIT program
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Self-identify as an under-represented student

Honors College Flaherty Scholarship
$500-$1000
The scholarship is awarded to Honors College students studying abroad during the Fall, Spring, or Summer term. The award is made possible by a gift from the estate of Gloria Flaherty, a former professor of German.

  • UIC campus endorsed program
  • Good Standing in the Honors College
  • Minimum 3.4 GPA
Application Deadline: March 22, 2013 for summer and fall programs

Honors College Deans Study Abroad Scholarship
$1,000-$2,500

The scholarship is awarded to Honors College students studying abroad during the Fall, Spring, or Summer term. The award was established to support traditionally under-represented students studying abroad.

  • UIC campus endorsed program
  • Good standing in the Honors College
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Minimum 3.4 GPA

Judy Curry Award
$900 for Fall
This scholarship, named after retired Deputy Associate Chancellor and former Professor of Communication at UIC, is awarded to a UIC undergraduate or graduate student for a fall semester overseas academic project or study abroad (preference for project/study related to China / U.S.).

  • Participation on a Study Abroad Office affiliated program
  • Minimum 3.2 GPA

Ikenberry Scholarship
$1000 for Fall
This scholarship, named after the former president of the University of Illinois, is awarded annually to an undergraduate student pursuing a UIC Study Abroad Office approved semester-long program.

Eligibility

  • Participation on a Study Abroad Office affiliated program
  • Minimum 3.2 GPA
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
Application Deadline: March 22, 2013 for fall programs

AANAPISI Study Abroad Scholarship
Up to $1,800
Through generous support from a grant issued through the U.S. Department of Education's Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution program, the AANAPI Study Abroad Scholarship Fund was established in Fall 2010 to support traditionally under-represented UIC undergraduate students in studying abroad.

Eligibility

  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Self-identification as an Asian American or Native American Pacific Islander
  • Preference is given to students participating on the UIC program "Labor, Gender, and Food in India.
Application Deadline: March 1, 2013 for all programs

Oaxaca Study Abroad Award
$500
Through generous support from UIC Associate Professor of Spanish and Director of Spanish for Heritage Speakers, Kim Potowski, the Oaxaca Study Abroad Award Fund was established in Fall 2011 to support students who are accepted into the Oaxaca study abroad program.  Six (6) awards of $500 are available for Summer 2013.

Eligibility

  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Must be eligible for Spanish 114 and applying for admission into the UIC summer 2013 study abroad program: Spanish Language and Culture for Bilingual Speakers in Oaxaca, Mexico

UIC-CIEE GAIN Summer Award
$1000 for summer
Through generous support from the Council on International Educational Exchange this fund was established to support traditionally under-represented students studying abroad.Preference will be given to applicants who are able to demonstrate financial need and/or those who can best demonstrate how they have overcome barriers in order to participate in study abroad.

Eligibility

  • Participation on a CIEE program
  • Self-identify as an under-represented student

Italy Study Abroad Award
$1000
The Italy Study Abroad Award Fund was established to support students who are accepted into the Study Abroad office approved program in Italy. Awards up to $1,000 are available for Summer and Fall 2013 semesters.

Eligibility

  • Be accepted into the Study Abroad office approved program in Italy
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Preference will be given to Italian minors
  • Some preference will be given to students who can demonstrate financial need
  • Must be an undergraduate student in good academic standing

Great Cities London Study Abroad Award
Up to $750
The Great Cities London Study Abroad Award Fund was established in Spring 2012 to support students who are accepted into the Great Cities London study abroad program. Awards up to $750 are available for Summer 2013.

  • Must be applying for admission into the UIC summer 2012 study abroad program:Great Cities London

Luca Bonomi Study Abroad Award
€250
The Luca Bonomi Award is made possible by a generous personal gift from Dr. Luca Bonomi, President of Siena's Dante Alighieri Society. The award offers one €250 (approximately $330) scholarship for the Summer 2013 term.

Eligibility

  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Preference will be given to Italian minors
  • Must be applying for admission into the UIC summer 2013 study abroad program: Italian Language and Culture in Siena, Italy

Dante Alighieri Study Abroad Award
$500
The Dante Alighieri Society Award is made possible by a generous gift from the Dante Alighieri Society. The award offers one $500 scholarship for Summer 2013 term.

Eligibility

  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Preference will be given to Italian minors
  • Must be applying for admission into the UIC summer 2013 study abroad program: Italian Language and Culture in Siena, Italy
  • A minimum of 15 students must participate on the program

Stefan and Lucy Hejna Family Foundation Scholarship
Up to $1,000
Through generous support from a grant issued through Stefan and Lucy Hejna Family Foundation, this scholarship offers awards of up to$1,000 for the Summer 2013 term. The award must be used towards the Central European Modernity study abroad program.

Eligibility

  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Preference will be given to students with Polish or History majors/minors.
  • Students must be accepted into the UIC program "Central European Modernity" in Krakow, Poland during the summer of 2013.
Application Deadline: March 22, 2013 for summer programs

UIC-ACT Scholarship
$1,000
Through generous support from the American College Of Thessaloniki, the UIC-ACT Scholarship was established in Spring 2013 to support students at public institutions in studying abroad.  The award offers five (5) scholarships of $1,000 for the Fall 2013 semester at ACT.

Eligibility

  • Acceptance into the American College Of Thessaloniki during the Fall semester
