Mary H. Carter, MPH (‘78), retired as director of nursing and health promotion at the Lake County (Illinois) Health Department and has spent the past year traveling in Costa Rica, India, Nepal, Israel, Lebanon, Egypt, Turkey, and the United States.

Sheri Cohen, MPH (‘91), gave a presentation on the "Seamless Continuum of Care in Community Care Networks: How to Integrate Health and Human Services" at the 1998 Annual American Public Health Association Meeting in Washington, DC.

Peter J. Furey, MPH (‘93), is pursuing a medical degree at the Northwestern University Medical School. He and his wife Suzanne were married in September.

Alfredo Gomez-Beloz, MPH (‘95), received the Anne S. Chatham Fellowship in Medicinal Botany from the Garden Club of America. The purpose of Mr. Gomez-Beloz’ research conducted under the fellowship is to describe the ethnobotany of the Warao Indians in the Orinoco Delta, Venezuela, with a focus on plants used to treat wounds. Mr. Gomez-Beloz also received a Fullbright Fellowship for the academic year 1998–99 in support of his studies in Venezuela.

Michael Hansen, MPH (‘96), gave presentations on "Are Homeless Drug Users at Higher Risk of HIV Infection? The Chicago Experience 1988–95" and "Designing Syringe Exchange Programs for the Populations They Are Intended to Serve" at the 1998 Annual American Public Health Association Meeting in Washington, DC.

Suzanne Hoban, MPH ('91), was the founder and first health center director of the Family Health Partnership Clinic in Harvard, Illinois. Begun in 1996 with the assistance of another SPH graduate, J. Maichle Bacon, MPH (‘74), the clinic is the first in the county to offer primary health care services to over 14,000 uninsured residents. A satellite clinic was recently opened in Woodstock, Illinois. The School of Public Health is well-represented at the clinic with a mix of volunteer and paid staff. Edward J. Wilt, Jr., MD, MPH ('76), volunteers eight hours a month at both the Harvard and Woodstock facilities.

Frank Hu, PhD (‘96), MPH (‘94), a research associate in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard University School of Public Health, has received extensive attention in the media based on his work examining the relationship between diet and heart disease. His has published findings from his studies in the British Medical Journal, the Journal of the American Medical Society, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and the New England Journal of Medicine. His recent research on the relationship between egg consumption and heart disease is the subject of an American Medical Association video presentation.

Kelvin J. Knight, MPH (‘98), gave a presentation on "Public Health and Medicine: A Collaborative Research Agenda for Emergency Departments" at the 1998 Annual American Public Health Association Meeting in Washington, DC.

Bret A. Lashner, MPH (‘88), of Solon, Ohio, is director of the Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease at the Cleveland Clinic Department of Gastroenterology._He and a colleague received a $75,000 grant from Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc., to support research on inflammatory bowel diseases and chronic pancreatitis.

Jeanette M. Lim, MPH (‘98), gave a presentation on the "DHHS Region V Behavioral Science Workforce Study" at the 1998 Annual American Public Health Association Meeting in Washington, DC.

John R. Lumpkin, MD, MPH (‘85), director, Illinois Department of Public Health, was named by the Pew Charitable Trusts to a national commission charged with proposing recommendations to enhance America’s ability to track and prevent health problems caused by environmental conditions. The commission is chaired by former U.S. Senator and Connecticut Governor Lowell Weicker and is composed of leaders from the health policy, health industry, government, academic, and nonprofit communities.

Laura Schieve, PhD (‘96), works as an epidemiologist in the Women’s Health and Fertility Branch within the Division of Reproductive Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
