This presentation will look at a holistic approach to determine appropriate community services that will empower families. Many times family systems are in turmoil due to dysfunctional behaviors caused by drugs, alcohol, or domestic violence. When the decision is made to remove the children, this adds stress to the family system. Families are institutions that deserve to be preserved, and as professionals we have a responsibility to work with families to connect them with appropriate and culturally sensitive services so they can remain intact. Health care professionals are part of a system that is involved with families. A home visiting model is one way to assist families by linking them to services that are family- driven, making it so children are less likely to experience out-of-home placement.
