This session will describe the Michigan Abstinence Partnership, which promotes abstinence from risky behaviors, particularly sexual activity, for 9-14 year old children. The Partnership is a unique model for the nation because of its diverse 155 member committee and its strategies for building consensus among those members. The Partnership focuses on media, local community coalition and their activities and education/promotional materials.

This session will identify the guiding principles of the Partnership and their applicability to other states/communities, and will identify strategies of consensus building and support for grass roots initiatives. Antecedents to risky behaviors for youth and successful interventions will also be discussed. Key learning activities will include videotape, group discussion, lecture and participatory learning. Handouts will be provided.
