FINAL NOTES PACKAGE

March 5, 1999

Hats Off To Holly:

Sophomore Holly Tamm was named First Team All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference after averaging 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game. The scrappy 5-foot-7 guard becomes only the third player in Flames' history to be named to the All-MCC first team, joining Penny Armstrong (1995) and Joanne McCarthy (1996, 1997). Both Armstrong and McCarthy earned MCC Player of the Year honors.

No Sign Of A Sophomore Jinx:

Tamm led the team in nearly every statistical category, including scoring, rebounding, steals and minutes played. She is the first Flame since Angela Gilbert in 1992-93, to lead the team in both scoring and rebounding in the same season. Tamm also is only the second sophomore this decade to lead the Flames in scoring. The First-Team All-MCC selection scored 20 or more points on five occasions this year including a career-best 22-point effort versus Loyola on Feb. 6.

High Is Low:

Holly Tamm's 5.0 rpg average is the lowest for a team leader in UIC women's basketball history. In 1989-90, Michelle Crosby pulled down 5.4 rpg for the previous low by a Flames leader.

No Break For Bielawski:

It's fitting that Jaime Bielawski lists Cal Ripken, Jr., as her favorite athlete. The senior point guard did not miss a single game in her collegiate career, appearing in 112 consecutive contests in her four seasons at UIC. The 5-foot-6 Bielawski ranks eighth on the UIC career assists list with 269 set-ups.

Sharpshooter From Sussex:

Freshman forward Angela Wenzel broke Jasmine Strange's single-season record for field goal percentage by shooting .549 (96-for-175) from the field. Strange converted 54.7% of her shots from the floor in 1995-96. Wenzel's .812 free throw percentage also ranks as the fifth highest in UIC single-season history. Robin's Raining The Threes:

Senior Robin Westrom finishes her UIC career ranked seventh on the Flames' career three-point field goals made list with 82 treys. She also finishes her playing days in fourth place on the career three-point field goals attempted chart (318). Westrom matched a personal best with 18 points at Wisconsin-Green Bay on Feb. 25, as she hit 7-of-10 from the field and 4-of-4 from three-point range. The 6-foot sharpshooter scored 18 points at Drake a year ago. Westrom scored in double figures on 10 occasions this season, but, prior to the UWGB game, had not scored at least 10 points in a game since Jan. 21, when she posted 11 points at Detroit. The West Chicago, Ill., native was named to the Pepsi Shootout All-Tournament Team in Oregon in November after averaging 12.5 ppg in a pair of contests. Her 7.5 ppg scoring average this season was a career high. Westrom's 41 three-point field goals made ranks ninth in single-season history and her 163 attempts ranks fifth.

The Best Things In Life Are Free:

Holly Tamm led the MCC in both free throws made (134) and attempted (185). Her 134 free tosses ranks tied for fourth in UIC history while her 185 attempts also ranks fourth in Flames' annals. The team's .692 free throw accuracy ranks as the fourth highest in school history. Over its last four games, UIC shot 77.2% (51-for-66) from the charity stripe.

The Word On Wenzel:

Angela Wenzel enjoyed one of the most productive seasons by a Flames rookie in recent history. The 6-foot Wisconsin native averaged 9.2 ppg and 4.0 rpg while shooting team-best marks of .549 from the field and .812 from the foul line. Her 9.2 ppg average is the highest by a UIC true freshman since Joanne McCarthy sprung for 11.4 ppg in 1992-93. In her final game of the season, Wenzel posted her first career "double-double", tallying 15 points and a career-best 11 boards, despite battling the flu, against Detroit in the quarterfinals of the MCC Championship. In MCC action, the rookie posted 11.8 ppg and 4.4 rpg while shooting .574 from the floor. She scored in double digits in 14 games in 1998-99 including four of the last five outings.

Terror On The Titans:

Angela Wenzel was an unstoppable player in three meetings with Detroit. In three contests, Wenzel shot 63.6% (21-for-33) from the field while averaging 15.0 ppg and 8.7 rpg.

Factory Of Rejections:

Sophomore center Stephanie Jost led the MCC with 1.41 blocks per game this season. The 6-foot-3 defensive standout now ranks fifth on the UIC career rejections list with 66 blocks. Her 38 re-directions this season ranks tied for seventh in UIC history. Over the last six games of the year, Jost averaged 2.2 blocks per outing. Twice this season she equaled a career high with five turnbacks - versus Eastern Michigan and at Detroit. Jost pulled down 4.3 rpg over the final six games of the year as well.

Not Your Average Josie:

Sophomore Josie Cole finished second on the team with a 9.6 ppg average despite missing the first nine games of the season with a shoulder injury. The 5-foot-9 Chicago native stepped up her production in conference play, contributing 10.9 ppg and 3.5 rpg. Cole was nearly automatic from the foul line in her final five games, shooting 83.3% (20-for-24).

Partaking In The Action:

Sophomore guard Erin Partaker scored in double figures in two of the last four games of the 1998-99 campaign, posting 10 points in the home finale versus Detroit, then registering 13 points versus the Titans at the MCC Championship. Against UDM at the conference tournament, the 5-foot-10 guard went 5-for-5 from the field and 3-for-3 from three-point territory while also blocking a pair of shots and pilfering three steals.

Looking Ahead To 1999-2000:

Head coach Tim Eatman's first recruiting class at UIC has already drawn high acclaim from some national publications. The Flames' class for 1999-2000 was rated as No. 20 in the nation by The All Star Girls Report Newsletter. UIC was ranked ahead of perennial top 25 teams Old Dominion (No. 21) and Notre Dame (No. 22). Eatman's class also received honorable mention accolades from Blue Star College Recruiting Rankings.
