1. What are the dates of the new 4-week and 8-week summer sessions?
In 2008, the 4-week session begins on May 19 and ends on June 13. It starts one week after the end of Spring Semester finals (May 5-9). The 8-week session begins immediately after the 4-week session ends, on June 16 and ends on August 8.
You can download and print a color calendar of the new session dates for summer 2008, in pdf format.
2. What courses are being offered in the 4-week and 8-week sessions?
You can check our overview of courses to see specifically what is being offered in the 4-week and 8-week sessions. For detailed schedule information, check the online Schedule of Classes.
3. Specifically what kinds of courses will be offered in the 4-week session?
Due to the intensive nature of the 4-week session, only 3 or 4 credit hour courses will be offered in the 4-week session.
4. How many courses can I register for in the 4-week session?
Due to the intensive nature of the session, enrollment in the 4-week session is limited to one 3 or 4 credit hour course per student.
5. If I want to register for courses in the 4-week and also in the 8-week session, how many credit hours can I take?
Undergraduates can register for up to 12 total credit hours in the summer, whether they result from a combination of courses taken in the 4-week and 8-week, or just courses taken in the 8-week session.
6. If I enroll in a course in the 4-week session, what might my schedule look like? How much more class time will be required?
All courses offered in the summer, whether in the 4-week or 8-week sessions, need to meet semester contact hour requirements. For a course condensed into a 4-week session, this means it will have will have longer class sessions and meet more often per week. Courses in the 4-week session will either meet in the morning or afternoon generally according to schedule below. Each class session includes a 15 minute break.
3 Credit Hour Course: 185 minute class session x 4 per week
Morning schedule: Mon, Tues,* Thurs, Fri: 9 am – 12:05 pm
Afternoon schedule: Mon, Tues,* Thurs, Fri: 1 pm – 4:05 pm
* Please note that 3 credit hour courses will not meet on Wednesdays.
4 Credit Hour Course: 195 minute class session x 5 per week
Morning schedule: Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri: 9 am – 12:15 pm
Afternoon schedule: Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri: 1 pm – 4:15 pm
7. Do we have an exam every week in the 4-week session, as opposed to 2 or 3 exams over the course of the semester?
The last day of the 4-week session is reserved for final exams. Other scheduling exams will be at the discretion of the instructor. However, because of the intensive nature of the 4-week session, your instructor may choose to give more frequent exams.
8. Now that there are two summer sessions, how will range tuition work?
Range tuition will be cumulative over the two sessions. So, for example, if you register for one 3 credit hour course in the 4-week session and two 3 credit hour courses in the 8-week session, you will be assessed for 9 hours.
9. How many hours do I need to take to be considered full time?
Full-time status in summer session is six or more credit hours. Since registration in the 4-week session is limited to one 3 or 4 credit hour course, you would be considered part-time if you only registered for the 4-week session. However, if you registered for a course in the 4-week and another course in the 8-week session, you would then be full-time.
10. Is financial aid available?
No special or additional financial aid program exists to cover the cost of taking summer session courses. Those UIC students with loans as part of their financial aid award and enrolled for a minimum of 6 summer credits may use any loan money that remains at the end of the second semester to cover the cost of summer session at UIC.
Visiting “summer session only” students are admitted nondegree and therefore are not eligible for financial aid from UIC. If you attend another school, please check with your home school’s financial aid office to see if they will enter into a “consortium agreement” with UIC.
11. When can I register? Will I be able to register for both sessions at the same time?
Advance registration for summer session will begin, as usual, in the beginning of April. Registration will be open at that time for both the 4-week and the 8-week session.
