I am a high school student. Can I attend summer session?
- If you will have graduated from high school before the first day of of the summer session (either the 4-week or the 8-week session) in which you want to enroll, you are eligible to apply for summer session. If you will have completed your high school coursework and finals prior to the start of summer session, but your graduation date is after the first day of summer session (either the 4-week or the 8-week session) in which you want to enroll, you may still be eligible. - If you are currently enrolled in high school but will not have at least finished your coursework and finals prior to the first day of summer session session (either the 4-week or the 8-week session) in which you want to enroll, you will not be eligible to attend summer session. However, you may be interested in programs for youth offered by other UIC campus units over the summer.
I am an international student. Can I attend summer session?
If you are an international student and wish to take undergraduate courses as a nondegree student at UIC this summer only, you may be able to attend as a Summer Session Only student. In addition to the general eligibility requirements for Summer Session Only applicants, international Summer Session Only applicants must meet the eligibility requirements below.
In order to attend our summer session as a Summer Session Only student, you must be a continuing student at another school in the U.S. and already have valid non-immigrant F or J status. If you are already in the U.S. on a valid J-2 visa, you may also apply. Please read the following guidelines for more information about eligibility:
- If you are already in the U.S. enrolled as a continuing student at a U.S. college or university on a valid student visa (F-1) and may legally remain in the U.S. for the duration of our session, you may attend UIC as a Summer Session Only student without further visa documentation. You will need to have a letter from the Designated School Official (D.S.O.) of your home college or university granting permission to attend UIC for the summer.
- If you are already in the U.S. enrolled as a continuing student at a U.S. college or university on a valid exchange visitor's visa (J-1) and may legally remain in the U.S. for the duration of our session, you may attend UIC as a Summer Session Only student without further visa documentation. You will need to have a letter from the Responsible Officer (R.O.) or Alternate Responsible Officer (A. R. O.) of your home college or university granting permission to attend UIC for the summer.
- If you are already in the U.S. on a valid exchange visitor's dependent visa (J-2) and may legally remain in the U.S. for the duration of our session, you may attend UIC as a Summer Session Only student without further visa documentation of your J-2 status. However, you will need to submit proof of your J-1's legal status in the U.S., such as a copy of the J-1's DS-2019.
Please note that because Summer Session Only students are admitted as nondegree students, UIC cannot provide international Summer Session Only students with immigration documents such as the I-20 or DS-2019.
For more information, please review the special instructions for international students who are interested in attending summer session.
- If you are interested in taking graduate level courses or in applying to a degree program at UIC, please visit the Office of Admissions website for information about applying.
- If you would like to take noncredit ESL courses only, you do not need to complete a Summer Session Only application. For more information, please visit the Tutorium in Intensive English website or contact them at (312) 996-8098 or at tutorium@uic.edu.

I want to continue my undergraduate studies at UIC beyond the summer. What do I need to do?
- If you wish to take undergraduate courses at UIC starting in the summer and to continue your studies at UIC in the fall or spring, you will need to apply as a Summer Session Only student for the summer and also apply with the regular Undergraduate Application prior to the appropriate fall or spring Undergraduate Application deadline. Note: The fall Undergraduate Application deadlines are earlier than the deadline for the Summer Session Only application.
- Please note that the courses you take in the summer will not automatically be applied towards your degree requirements, because you will be taking them as a nondegree Summer Session Only student. If you enter an undergraduate degree program at UIC, you will need to petition for your summer courses to be applied towards your degree program. If you have questions, please contact the Summer Session Office by phone at (312) 996-9099 or (800) 625-2013 or send us an email at summer@uic.edu.

- If you will be graduating before the summer and want to register for summer courses, you will first need to apply and be admitted for summer session.
- If you would like to take undergraduate courses over the summer, you can apply to UIC as a nondegree Summer Session Only student. For more information, please go to "Applying."

When can I register for the 2008 Summer Session?
All eligible students will receive a registration Time Ticket, which they can view online and which will show the earliest day and time that they can register. More information about the Time Ticket is available under "Registering."
- Eligible continuing UIC students can register during Advance Registration, on or after their appointed time.
- Summer Session Only and other nondegree students will register during Open Registration, on or after their appointed time.
How do I set up my logins to register?
- Students register for their courses online. In order to register for courses, you will need to establish two IDs with passwords: a NetID and an EnterpriseID. If you have not previously done so, you will be able to establish these logins once you have been admitted to UIC.
- Admitted Summer Session Only students will be mailed instructions for establishing their IDs with their Notice of Admission letters. Instructions for setting up these logins are also available under "Activating Your Registration Login."
- If you previously established your logins, but forgot your login information, please go to "Forgot Your Login?" for instructions on retrieving your login information.
I am a visiting student. How do I know which classes to take and whether they will transfer to my home school?
- Your home school will need to determine whether they will accept the courses you would like to take. Please take a look at our summer course offerings. Once you decide which courses you are interested in, bring a copy of the course descriptions to your advisor. He or she can help you determine whether they will transfer to your home school and whether they are equivalent to courses at your home school.
- If you need a course syllabus, please refer to "Course Syllabi" or contact the Summer Session Office by phone at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013 or by email at summer@uic.edu. We will try to provide you with a copy of the syllabus from a previous term.
- At the end of summer session, you will need to request to have your UIC transcript sent to your home school.
For how many credit hours can I register?
- Over the summer, undergraduate degree seeking and nondegree students can register for up to 12 total credit hours, without special permission, whether they result from a combination of courses taken in the 4-week and 8-week sessions, or just courses taken in the 8-week session. Graduate students can take up to 20 credit hours over the summer, without special approval.
- If you are a continuing UIC student and wish to register for more than the maximum credit hours allowed, please speak with your college advisor.
- If you are a Summer Session Only student and wish to register for more than 12 credit hours, please contact the Registration Help Line at (312) 996-8600 when you are registering and request permission to register for the additional hours.
Can I take a full year of science over the summer?
Because most science courses are offered in the 8-week session, it is not possible to take a full year of science if the first semester course is a prerequisite for the second semester course.
I would like to take a course that says I must register for a lab section, but I don’t need to take a lab to meet my home school’s requirements. Do I have to register for a lab section?
If the Schedule of Classes indicates that you must register for a lab section in addition to the lecture, you will need to register for it even if your home school does not require a lab.
Do I need to take a placement test to register for a course?
- Summer Session Only students are only required to take a placement test for introductory chemistry courses. Chemistry courses requiring a placement test include CHEM 101, CHEM 112, and CHEM 114. You can register for these courses before taking the placement test, but you will not be allowed to continue in the course if you do not take the placement test by the end of the first week of the Summer Session or if your testing score does not place you into the course. For more information, see "Placement Test Requirements."
- Placement tests are no longer required for Summer Session Only students who wish to take introductory courses in math, English composition, French, or German. Although the Schedule of Classes listings may indicate that a test is required, this requirement has been revised.
A course I need to take is full. Is there a way for me to get into it?
- You can check to see if another section of the course is offered and has seats available. Go to UIC Web for Student and log in to Student Self Service with your EnterpriseID and password. Next, click on “Registration & Records,” “Registration,” and then “Look-up or Select Classes.” You can then enter the course in which you are trying to enroll to see whether there are other sections which have openings.
- If no alternate section is available, keep checking back to see if a seat opens up in the course. Please call the Summer Session Office at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013 or email us at summer@uic.edu if you have any questions.
Tuition, Fees, and Financial Aid
How much does it cost to attend summer session?
Please go to "Tuition & Fees" for information about tuition and fees.
Where can I find an explanation of the fees that I will be assessed when I register?
Check the Explanation of Tuition and Fees page on the Office of Admissions and Records website and scroll down to the "Fees" section.
Do I have to pay the CampusCare Health Insurance Fee if I already have health insurance?
- Summer Session Only students, in addition to all freshmen, transfer, and graduate students new to UIC, are assessed the CampusCare Health Insurance Fee as part of their tuition and fees and are automatically enrolled in CampusCare - a comprehensive package of supplemental health benefits designed to provide protection against accidents and unexpected illnesses. The CampusCare Health Insurance Fee rate for the 2008 Summer Session is not yet available. The 2007 fee was $249. (Note: Fees are subject to change prior to the start of the term.)
- If you already have comparable health insurance, you can submit an online Waiver Form once you have been admitted to UIC and prior to the published deadline (see “Key Dates”). For more information about CampusCare, to submit an online Waiver Form, a Reinstatement Application Form, or a Dependent Enrollment Form, please visit the CampusCare website.
- Note that the CampusCare Health Insurance Fee is different from the Health Service Fee, which is a mandatory fee and cannot be waived. For more information about services covered by the Health Service Fee, please go to the “About” page on the Department of Family Medicine website.
What is the CTA U-PASS? Do I have to pay the U-PASS fee?
The U-PASS provides eligible students unlimited travel on all CTA buses and trains at a discounted rate throughout summer session. The U-PASS works like a CTA fare card. You insert it into the fare machines at CTA train stations and on CTA buses.
- All eligible students will be assessed the non-refundable U-PASS fee. More information about which students are eligible during the summer and how the U-PASS will work with the 4-week and 8-week summer session will be available in January.
- Only students with documented disabilities that affect their ability to use CTA service can petition for a waiver of the U-PASS fee. These requests will be reviewed on a case by case basis. For more information, contact the Office of Disability Services at (312) 413-2183 (Voice) or at (312) 413-0123 (TTY).
- For information about obtaining a U-PASS and using public transportation, please go to "Using Public Transportation."
When should I expect to receive a tuition bill?
The University no longer mails out tuition bills. Instead, it has implemented an electronic billing (E-Bill) program. At the beginning of June, you will receive an email notification to your UIC email address, or the email address that you elect to have UIC email forwarded to, letting you know that your E-Bill is available. Check “Key Dates” to see when payment for summer session will be due.
Does my E-Bill show my current student account balance?
The E-Bill is a snapshot of your student account as of the date the E-Bill is generated, and so it does not necessarily show your current balance. To view your current account balance, go to UIC Web for Student and log in to Student Self Service with your EnterpriseID and password. Next, select "Account Billing Information," and then "Student Account Summary."
How can I check my current account balance?
You can view your current student account balance by going to UIC Web for Student and logging in to Student Self Service with your EnterpriseID and password. Next, select "Account Billing Information," and then "Student Account Summary."
Can I get financial aid for the summer?
- Summer Session Only students: Summer Session Only students are admitted as nondegree students for the summer and are not eligible to apply for federal financial aid at UIC. If you attend another school, please check with your home school’s financial aid office to see if they will enter into a "consortium agreement" with UIC. A consortium agreement is an agreement between two schools that says the home school will allow the student to use their financial aid at another school. You may also want to consider applying for a private loan. Please go to "Financial Aid" for more information.
- University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) students: If you currently receive financial aid at UIUC or UIS and wish to use that financial aid to attend UIC's Summer Session, please contact your financial aid advisor to determine if you have financial aid available for the summer. If you do have financial aid available, you will need to apply through Intercampus Registration rather than as a Summer Session Only student.
- Current UIC students: Please contact the Office of Financial Aid at (312) 996-3126 for information about summer financial aid.

What is the difference between dropping a course and withdrawing from all courses?
If you are registered in multiple courses and want to drop some but not all of your courses, you would be dropping individual courses.
If you are registered in one or more courses and want to withdraw from all of your courses, this means that you will be withdrawing from the University for the term.
The procedures and refund polices for dropping an individual course when you are enrolled in multiple courses and withdrawing from all of your courses/withdrawing from the University are different, so please review them carefully. For more information, go to "Drop & Withdrawal Policies" and "Refund Policy."
