The Latin American Recruitment and Educational Services (LARES) Summer Success Seminar

Contact:Leonard Ramirez, LARES, 312-996-3356, lramirez@uic.edu
Students Served:Targets Latino students who are interested in pursuing excellence in higher education and desire support and guidance. Priority is given to students admitted to UIC through the full review process. Others who would like to attend may apply for consideration on a case-by-case basis. Students must be admitted through the LARES program, a recruitment and academic assistance unit at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

The overall mission of the LARES Summer Success Seminar is to prepare students for the intensity of college level work and introduce them to the culture of higher education and its increased expectations. The program links freshmen to the mechanisms of instrumental and personal support and provides incoming students with the guidance that can sustain them through their undergraduate education. The Summer Success Seminar creates a positive and welcoming classroom and program environment for students through a mathematics review and a culturally enriching writing and language-based six-week experience, which meets for half days Mondays through Thursdays. Students are introduced to faculty, campus personnel, student leaders as well as technical and academic resources in order to familiarize them with UIC's structure of support. One day of the week is devoted to topics such as test-taking strategies, time management and overcoming exam anxiety. Participants listen to guest lecturers from various disciplines that expose them to a typical freshmen-level classroom experience. Students are encouraged to work collaboratively in small groups that focus on peer editing, discussions, and problem solving. These friendly academic relationships often continue after the classes themselves have ended as witnessed in the daily activities that can be observed in the Cesar E. Chavez Study Center at LARES. For additional information, please contact the program.
