The UIC Summer Session is available to both current UIC students and visiting students.
Visiting students, called Summer Session Only students, include students from other schools who are home in Chicago over the summer, students who are visiting Chicago, graduating high school seniors looking to get a jump start on college courses, and college graduates who are interested in additional course work.

Visiting Undergraduate Students - Summer Session Only
Continuing UIC Graduate and Undergraduate Students
Continuing UIC students
If you are currently enrolled at UIC but not yet graduating and you want to take summer courses, you do not need to apply to attend summer session.
You will register for summer in the same way as you do for fall and spring. In the spring, all eligible continuing UIC students will be notified by email as to when they can view their Time Ticket online for summer and fall registration. Your Time Ticket shows the earliest date and time that you may register. Students in certain Health Sciences professional colleges may receive separate information from their colleges. For general registration dates, see “Key Dates.”
Undergraduates can register for up to 12 total credit hours in the summer, whether they result from a combination of courses taken in the 4-week and 8-week sessions, or just courses taken in the 8-week session. Graduate students can take up to 20 credit hours over the summer without special approval. If you are interested in taking additional hours, you should speak with your advisor.
Graduating UIC students
If you are currently enrolled but will be graduating prior to summer session and you wish to take undergraduate courses over the summer, you will need to apply using the online Summer Session Only application. Check “Key Dates” for the application deadline. Once you are admitted as a Summer Session Only student, you will be able to register for summer session during Open Registration.
If you are interested in taking graduate level courses, you will need to apply using the Graduate Application prior to the appropriate Graduate Application deadline. Please contact the Office of Admissions directly by phone at (312) 996-4350 or by email at uicgrad@uic.edu if you have any questions about the Graduate Application. Due to the number of emails that the Office of Admissions receives, it is recommended that you call them for the fastest assistance.
Visiting Undergraduate Students - Summer Session Only
Undergraduate students interested in attending classes at UIC for the summer only and not continuing into fall are considered Summer Session Only (SSO) students. If you are a visiting student and interested in taking undergraduate courses only over the summer, you should first check to see if you are eligible and then apply using the Summer Session Only application. The Summer Session Only application process is simple, direct, and there is no application fee.
Summer Session Only students are admitted as nondegree seeking students only for the summer term. If you also wish to apply for a different term, you will need to submit an Undergraduate Application by the posted application deadline for that specific term. Please read the information for transfer students for further instructions.
Check “Key Dates” for the application deadline.
Once your Summer Session Only application has been processed and approved, you will be sent a Notice of Admission and registration instructions.
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) Students
Students from our sister campuses are welcome to attend UIC’s Summer Session, but they need to apply and be admitted before registering. If you are a UIUC or UIS student, your application process will depend on whether or not you are planning to use financial aid to attend UIC’s Summer Session.
UIUC/UIS Students Planning to Use Financial Aid for Summer Session
If you currently receive financial aid at UIUC or UIS and intend to use that financial aid to attend UIC's Summer Session, do not use the Summer Session Only application to apply. Instead, you will need to apply through a process called Intercampus Registration. Please contact your financial aid advisor to determine if you have financial aid available for the summer and then refer to the Intercampus Registration web page for instructions and an application.
Once admitted, you will receive registration instructions.
UIUC/UIS Students Not Using Financial Aid for Summer Session
If you do not intend to use financial aid at UIC this summer, simply check to see if you are eligible to attend the UIC Summer Session and then apply using the Summer Session Only application.
Check “Key Dates” for the application deadline.
Once your Summer Session Only application has been processed and approved, you will be sent a Notice of Admission and registration instructions.
Transfer Students
If you would like to start at UIC in the summer and continue in the fall or spring, you will need to apply as a Summer Session Only student for the summer and also apply with the regular Undergraduate Application for the following fall or spring term prior to the appropriate fall or spring Undergraduate Application deadline.
Check “Key Dates” for the application deadline.
Note: The fall Undergraduate Application deadlines are earlier than the deadline for the Summer Session Only application.
If you have already applied and been accepted for the fall semester as an undergraduate student but would like to start in the summer, you will need to submit the Summer Session Only application. When you received your Notice of Admission for the fall, you also received an Intent to Enroll form. You will still need to submit your Intent to Enroll for the fall by the Intent to Enroll deadline even if you plan to attend summer session.
Please note that the courses you take in the summer will not automatically be applied towards your degree requirements because you will be taking them as a nondegree Summer Session Only student. You should contact your college in the fall to petition for those courses to be applied towards your degree program. If you have questions, please contact the Summer Session Office by phone at (312) 996-9099 or at (800) 625-2013 or by email at summer@uic.edu.
If you have any questions regarding transferring to UIC, contact the Office of Admissions directly by phone at (312) 996-4350 or by email at uicadmit@uic.edu. Due to the number of emails that the Office of Admissions receives, it is recommended that you call them for the fastest assistance.
High School Students
If you are currently a high school senior and will have graduated by the first day of summer session, you are eligible to apply as a Summer Session Only student. If you will have completed your high school coursework and finals prior to the start of our summer session, but your graduation date is after the first day of the summer session, you may still be eligible. Please contact us at (312) 996-9099 or at (800) 625-2013 for further information.
Check “Key Dates” for the application deadline.
If you will not have graduated from high school before the first day of summer session, you may be interested in programs for youth offered by other UIC campus units over the summer.
International Students
Degree-Seeking Applicants
If you wish to apply to UIC as a regular degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student, you will need to complete an undergraduate or graduate application. These applications, as well as information about applying as a degree-seeking student, can be found on the Office of Admissions website.
Summer Session Only Applicants
If you are interested in taking undergraduate courses at UIC over the summer only, you should apply with the Summer Session Only application. The Summer Session Only application is intended for visiting summer students who need undergraduate courses but do not intend to continue at UIC in the fall.
Please note that because Summer Session Only students are admitted as nondegree students, UIC cannot provide international Summer Session Only students with immigration documents such as the I-20 or DS-2019. In order to attend our summer session, you must be a continuing student at another school in the U.S. and already have valid non-immigrant F or J status. If you are already in the U.S. on a valid J-2 visa, you may also apply.
In addition to reviewing the general eligibility requirements for Summer Session Only applicants, please review the special eligibility guidelines for international Summer Session Only applicants for further information.
Check “Key Dates” for the application deadline.
Once your Summer Session Only application has been processed and approved, you will be sent a Notice of Admission and registration instructions.
Students interested in English as a Second Language (ESL) Courses
If you are interested in taking noncredit ESL courses only, you do not need to complete a Summer Session Only application. For information about taking ESL courses, see the Tutorium in Intensive English website or send an email to tutorium@uic.edu.
Visiting Graduate Students
If you are interested in taking graduate level courses at UIC over the summer, do not complete the Summer Session Only application. Summer Session Only students are accepted as nondegree undergraduate students.
Instead, you will need to apply using the Graduate Application prior to the appropriate Graduate Application deadline. If you have any questions regarding the Graduate Application, contact the Office of Admissions by phone at (312) 996-4350 or by email at uicgrad@uic.edu. Due to the number of emails that the Office of Admissions receives, it is recommended that you call them for the fastest assistance.
