Drop & Withdrawal Policies

Dropping a Course versus Withdrawing from All Courses

If you are registered in multiple courses during the summer and want to drop some but not all of your courses, you would be dropping individual courses.

If you are registered in one or more courses during the summer and want to withdraw from all of your courses, this means that you will be withdrawing from the University for the summer.

The procedures and refund polices for dropping an individual course when you are enrolled in multiple courses and withdrawing from all of your courses/withdrawing from the University are different, so please review them carefully. Check this Guide to Understanding Drop & Withdraw deadlines for an overview of key dates.

Dropping a Single Course when Enrolled in Multiple Courses

Note: There is a difference between dropping a course when you are enrolled in multiple courses and withdrawing from all of your courses. If you want information about withdrawing from all of your courses, see "Withdrawing from All Courses/Canceling Registration.”

If you drop a 4-week session course and thereby reduce your course enrollment to a lower tuition assessment range (e.g. from Range 1 to Range 2), then you will receive a refund of the tuition difference between the two ranges, provided the change is made by the first Wednesday of the 4-week session, Wednesday, May 21, the last day of Late Registration for the 4-week session. No refund will be issued for a 4-week session course that is dropped after this day.

If you drop an 8-week session course and thereby reduce your course enrollment to a lower tuition assessment range (e.g. from Range 1 to Range 2), then you will receive a refund of the tuition difference between the two ranges, provided the change is made by the first Friday of the 8-week session, Friday, June 20, the last day of Late Registration for the 8-week session. No refund will be issued for an 8-week session course that is dropped after this day.

Students can drop a course and avoid getting a "W" (withdrawn) grade if they drop the course before the last day of Late Registration for the session in which the course was scheduled. You may drop a 4-week session course after May 21 up through Wednesday, June 4 and receive a "W" grade. You may drop an 8-week session course after June 20 up through Friday, July 18 and receive a "W" grade.

See the instructions on how to drop a course for more information.

Withdrawing from All Courses/Canceling Registration

Note: There is a difference between withdrawing from all of your courses and dropping an individual course when you are enrolled in multiple courses. If you are registered in multiple courses and want information about dropping an individual course, see “Dropping a Single Course when Enrolled in Multiple Courses” above.

Withdrawing if you are enrolled in the 4-week session only or in the 4-week and 8-week session:

Students wishing to withdraw from all of their courses must do so by the end of the first day of the 4-week session, Monday, May 19, in order to receive a 100% refund. The deadline to cancel your registration in person at the Office of Registration and Records and receive a 100% refund is 5:00pm on May 19. The deadline to submit a registration cancellation request online and to receive a 100% refund is 11:59pm on May 19. Any request received dated on or after the first day of the term will be considered by the Registration Office to be a withdrawal after the official start of the term.

If you wish to withdraw from all of your courses after the first day of the 4-week session, Monday, May 19, refer to the refund policy page on the Office of Admissions and Records website for information about the pro-rata refund of tuition and refundable fees. Note: Neither the Health Service Fee nor the Health Insurance Fee are refunded, allowing students to continue to be covered and eligible to receive these fee-related services.

Health Insurance Fee Waiver: Although the Health Insurance Fee is not refunded when a student withdraws from the University on or after the first day of the term, if you have comparable health insurance, you may apply for a waiver of this fee by submitting an online Waiver Form by the deadline (see “Key Dates”).

Students who withdraw from all of their courses on or before the last day of Late Registration for the 4-week session, Wednesday, May 21, will avoid receiving "W" (withdrawn) grades for their courses. If you withdraw from your courses after this time, you will receive “W” grades.

See the instructions on how to withdraw from all courses for more information.

Withdrawing if you are enrolled in the 8-week session only:
